Here's How WhatsApp Allows Chat Transfers Without a Cloud Backup

(CTN News) – Among the latest updates to Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp, users can now easily transfer their data from one mobile device to another.

The latest feature of WhatsApp will allow users to transfer messages safely to another phone without leaving the app, according to WABetainfo.

Users can also transfer their complete account information including messages, photos, videos, and documents, excluding call history, via WhatsApp’s chat transfer feature.

In October 2015, WhatsApp introduced its backup feature through which users can save their history to Google Drive.

To use the Chat Transfer feature, you must meet the following requirements

  • Both your old and new Android phones should have Android OS Lollipop 5.1, SDK 23 or above, or Android 6 or above installed.

  • Don’t change your phone number if you already have one.

  • Until you begin the migration on your old phone, you must not register your new phone on WhatsApp.

  • Make sure your phones are close to one another.

  • You should have a power source connected to both phones.

  • You must have WiFi enabled on both your phones. A network connection is not required.

  • The transfer requires certain device permissions. Android 12 and below require precise location permissions, but WhatsApp does not collect your precise location.

  5. Scanning your old phone’s QR code with your new one.

  6. Connect your old phone to your new phone by accepting the invitation to connect.

  7. A percentage bar will display while your chat history is being transferred. Make sure both phones are unlocked and don’t leave WhatsApp. During the chat history transfer, messaging is paused. Any time can be canceled.

  8. Tap Done once the import is complete.
