CHIANG RAI – Police in northern Thailand’s Phrae province are moving quickly to track down everyone tied to a large drug stash found inside a rental warehouse in Dan Chumphon subdistrict. Officers discovered 40 black plastic-wrapped sacks lined up inside the building, with an early estimate of more than 8,000,000 methamphetamine pills.
On March 22, police from Song Police Station and Phrae Provincial Police confirmed the seizure of type 1 narcotics, commonly known as yaba, totaling about 8 million pills. At the same time, investigators began expanding the case to identify the people behind the shipment.
The operation started after the 191 patrol center at Song Police Station received a tip late in the morning on March 21. The report said a rented warehouse in Thok Kha village, Moo 2, Dan Chumphon subdistrict, Song district, may have been used to store illegal goods.
The tip came after workers were hired to move many large black plastic bags, believed to contain woven sacks, into the warehouse. The items reportedly did not look like normal merchandise.
After officers entered the warehouse to inspect the site, they found black plastic bags placed inside plastic baskets, as if they were ready to be moved again. Police opened one bag to check what was inside. They found a woven sack, and inside that sack were about 200,000 yaba pills.
Police then counted all the bags in the warehouse and found 40 in total. Based on the first inspection, officers believe the full shipment contained at least 8,000,000 meth pills.
The investigation is still ongoing. Police are now working to trace the warehouse owner, the tenant, and anyone else linked to the drugs. In addition, forensic teams are checking latent fingerprints and other evidence to help identify and arrest the network involved.
