PHAYAO — In a heart-wrenching discovery that has captured the attention of wildlife lovers across Thailand, a small leopard cub was found injured and alone on a road in Phayao province early Saturday morning.
The rescue took place around 1:30 AM on April 11, 2026. A resident driving near a resort on Yothin Road in the Mae Chai district spotted what looked like a small cat lying in the middle of the pavement. Upon closer inspection, the driver realized it was a young leopard cub unable to move due to an apparent leg injury.
Following the initial 191 emergency call, officers from the Mae Chai Police Station rushed to the scene. Recognizing the rarity and sensitivity of the situation, they immediately contacted officials at Doi Luang National Park to assist with the animal’s specialized handling.
While the cub’s exact age and gender have not yet been confirmed, wildlife experts on-site noted that the animal appeared distressed and was suffering from visible trauma to its leg.
Leopard Cub to Get Specialized Care in Chiang Rai
To ensure the best possible chance of recovery, the cub was transported to the Mae Lao Wildlife Breeding Center in Chiang Rai. This facility is well-equipped with veterinary specialists who specialize in protected forest species.
Current theories regarding the cub’s presence on the road include:

- Road Accident: The leg injury is consistent with being clipped by a passing vehicle in the dark.
