CHIANG RAI – A heartbreaking accident took place in Wiang Chai, Chiang Rai, after five 15-year-old boys went out to fish on Nong Luang and their boats overturned in the middle of the water. Two of them died, while three others made it back safely.
On Wednesday, officers from Wiang Chai Police Station, the Chiang Rai Narenthorn Center, and several rescue teams responded to reports of a boat accident at Nong Luang, a large public pond near Baan Saman Mit, Moo 1, Don Sila Subdistrict, Wiang Chai District.
At the scene, rescuers found two boats floating in the pond. One had flipped over. The other still carried three teenage boys, who were badly shaken. Rescue workers and residents rushed in to help and brought them safely to shore.
However, reports confirmed that two other boys had gone missing underwater. Rescue divers began a search and later recovered the first body at 2:19 p.m. The second was found at 2:36 p.m. Both had already died.
Rescue teams moved the bodies to the shore so officials could inspect the scene and notify the families. Fishing gear was also found inside the boats.
Initial reports said the five boys had gone fishing using two boats. The first boat carried two people, while the second carried three. After reaching deeper water, the second boat lost balance and overturned, throwing everyone on board into the pond.
The boys tried to swim to safety, but thick aquatic plants in the water may have made it harder. Two of them disappeared beneath the surface. Meanwhile, one boy was saved after friends in the first boat paddled over and pulled him aboard.
By the time villagers and rescue workers arrived, they helped guide the boat carrying the surviving boys back to shore. After that, divers searched for the missing teens and later confirmed that both had died.
This incident stands as a painful reminder of the dangers of small boats and open water, especially when young people head out without enough safety support.
