CHIANG MAI – As the annual monsoon season approaches, authorities in Northern Thailand are racing against the clock—and winning. In a rare and welcome victory for public infrastructure, the Regional Irrigation Office 1 in Chiang Mai has announced that a critical expansion of the Ping River flood wall is nearing completion well ahead of its original schedule.
For residents living along the riverbanks, this is not just a standard construction update; it is an absolute lifeline. The project, located downstream of the Tha Wang Tan Watergate in the Pa Daet Subdistrict, is designed to drastically increase the city’s flood prevention efficiency. With the dark clouds of the rainy season gathering, this robust new defense system promises to protect both densely populated urban neighborhoods and vital agricultural lands.
Mr. Atthawit Nakwatchara, Director of the Regional Irrigation Office 1, recently led a high-level inspection team to the site to assess the final stages of the build. According to the on-site evaluation, the embankment is currently over 90% complete. Instead of wrapping up in September 2026 as initially planned, the upgraded flood wall will be fully operational by the end of May 2026—a full four months early.
To understand the urgency behind this multi-million baht initiative, one must look back to the historic floods of 2022. During that devastating monsoon season, the Ping River swelled far beyond its historical averages. The sheer volume of water easily breached the original barriers, spilling over the old embankments and cascading into residential neighborhoods.
The resulting floodwaters submerged homes, ruined local businesses, and devastated crops across a wide radius. Families were displaced, and the local economy took a severe hit. Recognizing that the old infrastructure was no longer sufficient to handle changing weather patterns, the Royal Irrigation Department immediately began surveying and designing a stronger, taller, and more resilient barrier.

Engineering a Stronger Defense System
The ongoing upgrades at the Tha Wang Tan Watergate are comprehensive. Engineering teams have completely reimagined the structural integrity of the wall to handle extreme water flow. By elevating and fortifying the barrier, the city is effectively building a fortress against future deluges.
Key structural improvements of the new flood wall include:
- A Massive Height Increase: The old retaining wall stood at 3.70 meters. Engineering teams have added 1.50 meters, bringing the new maximum height to an imposing 5.20 meters.
- Extended Protection Range: The newly reinforced wall stretches across a total length of 303 meters, providing a continuous shield for the most vulnerable bends of the river.
- Seamless Integration: Construction crews have meticulously leveled the areas around the existing structures and seamlessly connected the new barrier sections with the old ones. This eliminates weak points where water previously seeped through.
- High Volume Capacity: Once fully completed, the upgraded river channel and wall system will be able to safely accommodate a massive water flow of up to 800 cubic meters per second.
One of the most notable aspects of the Tha Wang Tan upgrade is the careful attention paid to the river’s natural ecosystem. Rivers are living entities, and the Ping River is home to diverse aquatic life vital to the region’s ecological health.
During the construction of the massive 5.20-meter-high wall, engineers had to ensure that the river’s fish ladders were not obstructed. Fish ladders are essential stepped structures that allow fish to migrate upstream, bypassing the physical barrier of the watergate to spawn and feed.
The design team took special care to adjust the ground levels around the fish ladder, ensuring the new retaining walls integrated smoothly without disrupting aquatic migration routes. This careful balance highlights a modern approach to civil engineering, where protecting human settlements does not have to mean ignoring local biodiversity.

Protecting Pa Daet and Saraphi Districts
According to MGR Online, the strategic placement of this infrastructure is no accident. The Tha Wang Tan Watergate acts as a crucial bottleneck for water flowing south from the heart of Chiang Mai. By securing this specific downstream section, authorities are directly lowering the flood risk for two highly vulnerable areas: the Pa Daet Subdistrict and the neighboring Saraphi District.
These areas are a unique blend of expanding suburban communities and traditional farming zones. A river breach here means the destruction of seasonal harvests that local farmers depend on for their livelihoods. The new wall ensures that these economic hubs can thrive without the looming anxiety of seasonal flooding.
