LAMPHUN – A local family has been left reeling after a 17-year-old high school student was allegedly lured and sexually assaulted by a trusted relative. The incident, which began as a promised sightseeing trip to Chiang Mai, ended at a police station in Lamphun, where the victim’s older sister filed a formal complaint.
The report was filed with the police. Capt. Songphon Namwong, Deputy Investigation Officer at the Mueang Lamphun Police Station. The victim, identified only as “Ms. Po” (a pseudonym), is a Grade 11 student who had been staying with her sister in Lamphun while waiting for her university semester to begin in Chiang Mai.
According to police reports, the suspect is a 24-year-old cousin known as “Mr. Am.” On the day of the incident, Mr. Am visited the sisters at their residence and offered to take the teenager on a motorcycle tour of Chiang Mai. He specifically mentioned visiting the famous Tha Phae Gate, a popular cultural landmark.
Believing her sister would be safe with a family member, the older sister allowed the girl to go. However, the trip took a dark turn:
- The Lure: After driving around for a short period, Mr. Am claimed he needed to stop at his dormitory to rest before driving her back home.
- The Assault: Once inside the room, the suspect allegedly used physical force to overpower the victim. Despite her resistance, the teenager was sexually assaulted.
- The Return: Following the assault, Mr. Am drove the girl back to her sister’s house in Lamphun, threatening her to stay silent about what had happened.
How the Truth Came to Light
Upon her return, the older sister noticed that the victim was visibly distressed and acting unusually. After persistent questioning, the 17-year-old broke down and revealed the traumatic details of the afternoon.
The family immediately traveled to the Mueang Lamphun Police Station to initiate legal proceedings. Because the assault allegedly took place at a dormitory within the jurisdiction of Chiang Mai, Lamphun police are coordinating with Chiang Mai Provincial Police to gather evidence and issue an arrest warrant for the suspect.
This tragic case serves as a stark reminder that danger does not always come from strangers. Safety experts and local authorities urge families to remain vigilant, even with known acquaintances or relatives.
The investigation is currently ongoing. Medical examinations have been ordered to provide forensic evidence for the case. Under Thai law, sexual assault involving a minor carries severe penalties, and authorities have stated they will pursue the maximum legal consequences for the perpetrator.
The victim is currently receiving support from her family and is expected to undergo counseling to help process the trauma.
