Rabid Bat Was Found In Orange County

Rabid bat in Fountain Valley has tested positive for rabies, according to authorities.

Officials at the Fountain Valley Tennis Center have reported that a bat was found in a parking lot near pickleball court 1 at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

We urge anyone who may have had physical contact with this bat or saw someone else in contact with it to contact the HCA Health Care Agency Communicable Disease Control Division at 714-834-8180 as soon as possible.

An animal’s saliva contains the Rabid bat virus, which can be transmitted to humans through bites.

The saliva of a Rabid bat animal can also transmit rabies when it is contaminated with the eyes, mouth, or an open wound.

A majority of human rabies cases in the United States have been caused by bat strains of the disease in recent years

In order to minimize the risk of rabies, HCA and OC Animal Care recommend the following measures:

  • Keep all contact with wild animals to a minimum.
  • All cats and dogs should be vaccinated against Rabid bat.
  • Sleeping with unscreened windows or doors open is not recommended.
  • Close off the area if bats are seen inside the house or other structure.
  • Close off any entry points into the house after the bat(s) have been removed.
  • Animals will be attracted to pet food if it is left outside.
  • Wash all animal bites immediately with soap and water, then contact your doctor.
  • OC Animal Care should be notified of all animal bites
  • Stray animals should be reported to OC Animal Care.
  • Potential exposure to bats or other wild animals should be reported to the HCA Communicable Disease Control Division.
  •   Contact OC Animal Care at (714) 935-6848 if you discover a bat in your home, an animal bite, or a stray animal.
