While sports movies have long been a part of the film industry, it would be fair to say the subject matter does not always translate well to the big screen.
Many directors steer clear of the genre due to the stereotypical nature of many storylines, but when sports films are done well they can be extremely inspirational.
In terms of film series, only Rocky makes it in to the top 20 list of the most successful movie franchises of all-time according to a recent study by Betway.
However, Rocky is in the top 10 film franchises that have been the biggest hit with fans on review site IMDb, highlighting the popularity sports films have with the masses.
With that in mind we take a look at some of the sports films scheduled for release in 2023, starting with a biopic that should attract plenty of interest amongst moviegoers.
Heart of a Lion
Director George Tillman Jr will hope to work his magic with Heart of a Lion – a biopic that chronicles the life of former world heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman.
Now more famous for endorsing food grilling machines, Foreman was once part of a golden era for the sport of boxing alongside Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and many others.
Forest Whitaker, Khris Davis and Sullivan Jones are amongst the line-up for a sports film that could well be one of the biggest hits of 2023.
Having starred in the previous two Creed movies, Michael B Jordan ups the ante in the third edition by adding directorial duties to his workload.
Having received mentorship from Denzel Washington, there is every chance that Jordan will make a massive success of a task he describes as the ‘most challenging thing’ he’s done in his career.
Creed III is the first film in the franchise not to feature Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa and sees Jonathan Majors starring opposite Jordan as boxing prodigy Damian Anderson.
Next Goal Wins
Everyone loves a well-told sporting underdog story and Next Goal Wins has the potential to deliver plenty of feelgood moments for film fans when it is released next spring.
The movie tells the story of the American Samoa soccer team who were beaten 31-0 by Australia – the worst defeat suffered by any side in a World Cup game.
Michael Fassbender plays a maverick coach tasked with improving the team’s fortunes, while Will Arnett brings further star quality to the acting line-up.
The Underdoggs is the story of former NFL star Jaycen ‘2Js’ Jenning (Snoop Dogg) who agrees to coach a youth football team to avoid going to prison.
Tika Sumpter, Mike Epps, Andrew Schulz and George Lopez are also in the line-up for a film that bears some resemblance to The Bad News Bears and The Mighty Ducks.
Charles Stone III will direct the movie having made a name for himself 20 years ago with the coming-of-age teen comedy-drama film Drumline.
