Google Denies Gmail Closure Amidst Social Media Rumors
(CTN News) – Google reiterated on Friday that it is not closing down its popular email service, Gmail, following claims on social media platforms that the service would be discontinued later this year.
An alleged screenshot of an email from Google to Gmail users revealed that the corporation was “sunsetting Gmail” on August 1 of this year. The email further stated that Gmail will no longer “support sending, receiving, and storing emails” after August”.
“Gmail’s journey is ending after years of connecting millions worldwide, facilitating seamless communication, and creating innumerable connections. Gmail will be officially sunsetted on August 1, 2024, ending the service. “Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails,” the screenshot stated.
The screenshot was shared thousands of times on X, formerly Twitter, and TikTok, with producers alleging the shift came after Google received criticism for its AI image tool Gemini. This week’s discussion centred on the picture tool, which produced photos of “racially diverse” Nazi soldiers.
Google ultimately intervened and put an end to the speculation. “Gmail is here to stay,” according to its article on X.

Tech experts also turned to social media to dispel the allegations, stating that the firm was closing down the HTML version of Gmail this year, not the entire email platform. “Gmail stopped the HTML-only version of the service in January 2024. Standard @gmail works just fine. “Stupid hoax,” remarked Marsha Collier, a technology educator.
