KAMPHAENG PHET – A heartbreaking case of domestic violence has surfaced in the Thep Nakhon sub-district of Mueang Kampheang Phet, where a son has reportedly spent years terrorizing his elderly mother and his wife. Despite multiple police interventions and legal warnings, neighbors and family members say the abuse has only escalated, leaving the household in a constant state of fear.
The story came to light after relatives and neighbors, unable to tolerate the ongoing violence, reached out to local media and authorities for help. According to a report by MGR Online, the suspect, identified locally as “Mr. Ball,” is accused of frequent alcohol-fueled rampages.
The suspect’s 32-year-old daughter, “Fah Sai” (a pseudonym), spoke to journalists about the grim reality inside their home. She described her father as having a naturally hot temper that turns explosive when he drinks. Over the past five years, his behavior has become increasingly volatile.
Fah Sai noted that her father often waits for other family members to leave for work before attacking those who cannot defend themselves—his wife and his elderly, frail mother.
- Repeated Offenses: The family has filed official police reports on at least three separate occasions.
- Failed Agreements: Authorities previously facilitated a four-point “behavioral contract.” This agreement explicitly stated that if Mr. Ball committed further violence, he would face the full extent of the law under the Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence Act, B.E. 2550 (2007).
- Escalation: Despite these warnings, the suspect allegedly ignored every condition, leading his daughter to ask a chilling question: “Do we have to wait for someone to die before something is actually done?”
Mother and Wife Living in the Shadows of Abuse
When local officials and reporters visited the home, they discovered a scene of quiet suffering. In a small downstairs bedroom, they found the suspect’s elderly mother. She bore visible signs of physical trauma, including a significantly swollen and bruised left cheek.
Adding to the tragedy, the elderly woman suffers from memory loss. Despite her injuries, she reportedly rushed to hug the visiting officials, momentarily forgetting her pain in the excitement of having guests. Nearby, her husband lay bedridden, unable to move or protect his wife from their son’s outbursts.
When confronted by reporters and local leaders, Mr. Ball admitted to drinking but flatly denied any physical abuse. He claimed to be a devoted son who takes excellent care of his mother and accused his neighbors of spreading lies to ruin his reputation.
In a display of defiance, he challenged the authorities directly. He told officials that if they wanted to arrest him, they should go ahead, but taunted them by saying his mother would have no one to care for her if he were behind bars.
This case highlights the complexities of domestic violence in Thailand, where family loyalty and the role of the caregiver often clash with the need for legal protection. Local community leaders and members of the Thep Nakhon Subdistrict Municipality are now working with social services to find a solution that ensures the safety of the elderly parents while holding the perpetrator accountable.
For now, the family remains in a state of high alert. They are calling for the strict enforcement of the Domestic Violence Act to prevent what they fear could be an even greater tragedy.
