Songthaew Crashes in Khao Kitchakut National Park

A pickup truck used to transport tourists (Songthaew) crashed and toppled over in Khao Kitchakut National Park yesterday, killing one person and injuring nine others, including three Russian visitors.

The tragedy occurred at 8.30 a.m. in the Noen Sai region of Khao Kitchakut district, on the same day as the park’s annual Buddha’s Footprint Celebration celebration, park chief Chawin Pinkaew told the Nation.

The group of ten tourists, seven Thai and three Russian, were returning after a visit to the Buddha footprint.

Todsaphorn Saowaphong, 30, drove the grey passenger pickup located 700 metres from the Phra Bat Luang checkpoint. It apparently provided a frequent shuttle service to and from the site.

Mr. Yuppharet Thanaporn, 28, died at the scene. The others, mainly Russian visitors, were hurt and taken to Khao Khitchakut Hospital.

According to Chanthaburi Governor Monsit Paisanthanawat, an initial inquiry determined that the accident was caused by slick road conditions owing to morning dew.
