(CTN News) – Fani Willis, district attorney for Fulton County, is defending her choice for a special prosecutor in the subversion case against Trump, following unsubstantiated claims that the two had an improper relationship.
Willis was publicly speaking for the first time since a defendant filed a lawsuit against her last week during a service celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy at Atlanta’s Big Bethel AME Church.
While Fani Willis did not explicitly confirm or deny any romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, she called him a “legal superstar” without mentioning his name. Additionally, she claimed the attacks were racially motivated, pointing out that Wade is black, while Fani Willis chose two white prosecutors.
There is no clear path forward for me. My right to appoint special counsels entitled me to appoint three. There was no difference in the hourly rate between them. I have assembled an exceptional team, so why are they surprised that they can accomplish such a feat? Willis wondered.
According to court documents filed by former Trump campaign operative Michael Roman, Wade was hired by Fani Willis after becoming romantically involved with her.
He alleges that Fani Willis and Wade went on multiple vacations together. He is seeking the dismissal of his own election-related charges in Georgia.
Immediately following Fani Willis’ remarks, Trump called the allegations a “proof the Georgia case against him should be dropped” at a pre-caucus rally in Iowa.
Trump said, “She’s filtering money to her boyfriend, and big money, and he has never done a case before. He has never done a felony case.
Wade had little experience prosecuting criminal cases before he was appointed as lead prosecutor, according to the Washington Post. Despite that, it’s important to note that the filing doesn’t include any proof – only claims.
In the case, the judge plans to schedule a hearing next month.
