The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has told a press briefing they seized more than 30,000 units of vaping products in northern Thailand’s Chiang Mai Province. The vaping products were valued at ten million baht, according to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).
The seizure in Chiang Mai comes as authorities crack down on illegal vape products being sold to teenagers.
According to police, with the use of the Line app, the investigation team was able to locate the online e-cigarette store “Yai Vape,” which offered a wide variety of products. The Consumer Protection Division’s police team then targeted a residence in the San Sai district of Chiang Mai that was used as the distribution point.
During the raid, police seized 31,790 vaping devices, including disposable and refillable vaporizers, pods, tanks, and e-liquid, and estimated their value at 10 million baht.
Police arrested the sole proprietor, identified as Mr. Saranyu. He faces charges under two statutes: the Customs Act for concealing unlawful imports and the Consumer Protection Act for selling illicit products.
According to the police young people are attracted to the vape products as they tastes like milk tea or candy. Plus, vapors come in popular cartoon characters that look like toys so that kids could hide them from their parents.
According to the authorities, one of these vapers was discovered on a girl who was barely twelve years old.
Electronic cigarettes and vapors are still illegal in Thailand, the police say their’ unlawful importation from outside the country highlights the need for more stringent enforcement of import laws.
