(CTN News) – In a somber announcement on Wednesday, WWE revealed the passing of pro wrestling icon Michael Jones, better known by his ring names Virgil and Soul Train Jones. The 61-year-old’s cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

The news was initially shared by Mark Charles III, a referee associated with several smaller wrestling promotions, who posted on Facebook, “My dear friends, it is with great sorrow that I bring news from the Jones family of the passing of our beloved Michael Jones, whom we know and loved as Virgil, Vincent, Soul Train Jones and more.”

Jones, who began his wrestling journey with Memphis-based Championship Wrestling, rose to prominence as the bodyguard for “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE).

A pivotal figure, he played a role in Andre the Giant’s victory over ulk Hogan for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Virgil endeared himself to fans during a storyline with DiBiase after the 1991 Royal Rumble, culminating in a triumphant moment at WrestleMania VI where he defeated DiBiase for the Million Dollar Championship.

Transitioning to World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1996 as Vincent, Virgil joined the New World Order faction, contributing to the infamous ratings war between WWF and WCW.

Retiring from full-time wrestling in 2000, he continued making sporadic appearances for various promotions, including WWE and All Elite Wrestling.

Following his wrestling career, Virgil became a fixture at wrestling conventions, engaging with fans and signing autographs. In 2022, he disclosed battling health issues, including two strokes, dementia, and a stage 2 colon cancer diagnosis.

WWE expressed condolences, stating, “WWE is saddened to learn that Michael Jones, known to WWE fans as Virgil, has passed away. WWE extends its condolences to Jones’ family, friends and fans.”

As fans mourn the loss of a wrestling legend, Virgil’s impact on the industry remains etched in the memories of those who followed his storied career.
