American Man Faces Charges After Jumping From Pattaya Ferry

PATTAYA – A 36-year-old American tourist, identified as John D., is under investigation after jumping from a ferry headed to Tawaen Beach on Koh Larn. The incident, which happened yesterday afternoon, shocked passengers and crew, and could lead to charges under Thai maritime safety laws.

The jump took place shortly after 2.30 p.m. on Thursday, 9 October 2025. The ferry, which left Bali Hai Pier in South Pattaya with about 60 passengers on board, was en route to Koh Larn when witnesses saw John stand, climb the rail, and plunge into the Gulf of Thailand without warning. Several passengers described confusion on deck as the crew reacted and nearby boats were alerted.

“The American just jumped, no hesitation,” said Somchai R., a 42-year-old Thai passenger travelling with his family. “People were screaming, and the crew threw him a life ring, but he ignored it. He kept swimming away like he did not want help.”

Emily Carter, a British visitor, said the man looked “distant” and was muttering to himself before he went overboard. “He did not seem drunk, but something felt off,” she added.

Crew and Passengers Startled By American

Crew members slowed the ferry and launched a small rescue craft. According to the captain, John resisted attempts to bring him in, swam away from rescuers, and shouted incoherently.

“He was yelling that he did not need help and wanted to be left alone,” said Captain Wichai S. “We could not leave him in the water, it is dangerous with currents and passing boats.”

After almost 20 minutes, the ferry team and a nearby speedboat managed to pull him from the sea. He was taken back to Bali Hai Pier, where Pattaya City Police and marine rescue officers were waiting. John appeared shaken but had no visible injuries.

He was taken to a local police station for questioning and refused to give clear answers about his motives or situation.

Pattaya Police Chief Colonel Nawin Theerawit said officers are looking at possible contributing factors, including mental health or substance use. “We are considering all possibilities,” he told reporters. “His behaviour suggests he may have been in distress.

We are working with the U.S. Embassy to confirm his identity and background.” Police have requested medical checks to see if he had taken drugs or alcohol, although initial observations did not show obvious signs of intoxication.

Depending on the findings, John could face charges under Thailand’s maritime safety rules for putting passengers at risk or disrupting operations. “Jumping from a moving vessel endangers the individual and others,” Colonel Nawin said. “Charges for public endangerment or disturbing the peace are possible.” Immigration officers are also reviewing his visa status, which could be affected by any offences.

The case has sparked debate among locals and expatriates in Pattaya about tourist behaviour and the pressures some visitors face. Koh Larn, known for clear water and busy beaches, draws thousands daily. Incidents like this raise questions about safety on popular routes. “We see all kinds of people here,” said Nonglak P., a vendor at Tawaen Beach. “Many come to relax, but some look like they are running from something. It is sad.”

Police have asked anyone with videos or further details to contact them. John remains in custody while officers, along with embassy staff, work to piece together what led to his risky leap. The incident highlights the need for strong safety practices on Pattaya’s ferry services and a focus on mental health support for visitors and residents alike.

German  Rescued from Well

On the same day as the Pattaya incident, a 63-year-old German man was pulled to safety after falling into a deep well and treading water for about 40 minutes while cutting grass on his property, thanks to a neighbour who heard his cries.

Emergency responders were called to Soi Lang Wat Pa Yup in Sattahip Subdistrict at 11:00 on 9 October after reports of a foreign national trapped in a well more than 20 metres deep. Rescue teams from the Sawang Rojthammasathan Foundation mobilized and headed to the scene.

On arrival, rescuers found the man weakly treading water and calling for help. They lowered a rope for him to secure around his body, then pulled him up. The operation took around 15 minutes, and he was safely brought to the surface.

The man was identified as Mr Roland, 63, a German national, who appeared uninjured after the ordeal. His son stood nearby, anxious but supportive throughout the rescue.

Neighbour Paijit Khiaokasem, 53, said she saw Roland walk past her home that morning carrying a grass trimmer, then he disappeared from view. When she later heard shouts for help, she rushed to check and found he had fallen into the well. She contacted authorities immediately.
