MUMBAI – Keshav Maharaj has become a household name across India. Indian fans see more than a South African cricketer; they see a player who shares their heritage, values, and love for the game.

Born in Durban to Indian parents, Maharaj’s story weaves together success on the field and a deep, ongoing connection to his Indian roots. From his first cricket lessons as a young child to achieving the vice-captaincy of South Africa’s national team, Maharaj’s journey is filled with dedication and pride.

His career features impressive milestones, but his strong ties to Indian culture and his devotion to spiritual traditions have made him an icon for many in India.

Keshav Athmanand Maharaj was born on 7 February 1990 in Durban to Atmanand and Kanchan Mala, both descendants of Indian migrants from Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The family’s journey from India to South Africa began in 1874, and their history has shaped Maharaj’s life.

Raised in a Hindu home, he took part in festivals such as Diwali and Holi, customs he proudly continues. Cricket entered his life early, with his father Atmanand—a former Natal wicketkeeper—introducing him to the sport at just two years old. Keshav’s talent developed quickly, and by 16, he debuted in first-class cricket for KwaZulu-Natal in the 2006-07 season.

Keshav Maharaj quickly became a key player in domestic cricket, joining the Dolphins lineup regularly by 2009-10. His international career launched with a Test debut in 2016 at Perth’s WACA Ground, where he took three wickets on his first outing in challenging conditions.

In 2018, his performance against Sri Lanka in Colombo set records, with 9 wickets for 129 runs—still the best figures by any visiting bowler in Sri Lanka and unrivalled by any South African in Asia. He followed this with a rare Test hat-trick in 2021, removing three West Indies batsmen in quick succession.

In 2025, Keshav Maharaj notched up his best ODI figures with a five-wicket haul against Australia in Cairns, leading South Africa to a big win and setting a national record for an international spinner. His skills aren’t limited to international cricket; they are matched by strong showings in T20 leagues worldwide.

Keshav Maharaj has played in the Caribbean and Bangladesh Premier Leagues and debuted for the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024. As captain of Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20, Maharaj has shown strong leadership and tactical sense.

Why Keshav Maharaj is Loved in India

Keshav Maharaj’s cricket skills have earned respect, but it’s his cultural connection that has set him apart. When he brandished a bat featuring the “Om” symbol during a 2023 World Cup game, Indian social media buzzed with excitement.

Fans celebrated his open pride in his Hindu faith. He regularly visits temples before important games, a habit that many in India recognize and appreciate. His willingness to share his traditions and spiritual practices has helped millions feel a personal connection to him.

His relationship with Lerisha Munsamy, a skilled Kathak dancer and attorney, makes his story even more special for Indian fans. The couple met through friends, and Lerisha’s family ties to Uttar Pradesh, as well as their traditional Indian wedding in April 2022, have made their partnership a source of fascination.

Their wedding, held after pandemic delays and family loss, was a vibrant celebration of Indian customs. Fans often recall the moment Keshav Maharaj joined Lerisha in a Kathak performance for his mother’s birthday, impressing family and highlighting his respect for culture.

Lerisha often shares her dance performances on social media, attracting many admirers and building the couple’s profile.

Their daughter, born in 2024, added another joyful chapter, cheered on by their supporters. Pictures of their family outings and celebrations only add to their appeal. For many, they represent a perfect mix of South African achievement and Indian tradition.

More Than Just Cricket

Keshav Maharaj’s time with the Rajasthan Royals in 2024 brought him closer to his ancestral homeland. Playing in the IPL fulfilled a lifelong ambition and let him connect directly with Indian fans. His teammates note how easily he fits into the club’s family atmosphere. Off the field, Maharaj shares parts of his daily life, including a passion for cooking and moments spent with his German Shepherd, Rio, adding a relatable, down-to-earth quality.

His work ethic and modesty shine through, often credited in part to the values passed down by his parents. The pride felt by his family when he received his Test cap reflects years of perseverance against the odds in South Africa’s divided sporting past. Supporters in India, who are often inspired by stories of hard work and overcoming obstacles, see a bit of themselves in Maharaj—a sportsman who values his history and remains grounded.

Keshav Maharaj stands out not only because of his cricket but also thanks to the traditions and spirit he brings with him. His performances and leadership have left a mark on the sport, but in India, it’s his pride in his heritage and family life that have made him so special.

The “Om” symbol on his bat, his regular temple visits, and his marriage to a Kathak dancer have turned him into a familiar and admired figure. For many, Maharaj is more than a South African player—he is someone who reflects the values and culture of India itself. With every game, he strengthens the connection, showing the power of sport and shared heritage in bringing people together.
