Thailand’s newly elected Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, stated today that her predecessor’s 10,000 baht “digital wallet” initiative has to be reassessed owing to a change in the country’s economy.
In her first press conference since becoming Thailand’s youngest Prime Minister, Ms. Paetongtarn told reporters that a lot has happened since the digital wallet system was launched, therefore further research is needed, as well as assuring compliance with the existing fiscal discipline standards.
The previous administration introduced the scheme’s initial stage on August 1st, allowing public registration by smartphone. Millions of individuals have already enrolled.
People who do not own smartphones can begin registering on September 1st. The financial reward of 10,000 baht per person is expected to be paid out in the fourth quarter of this year.
The prime minister also disputed that her father controls or dominates her, stressing that she is independent and has her own beliefs.
She informed the press that she was prepared to carry the load, face the challenges, and serve the people by addressing the critical issues confronting the economy, the health-care system, illegal drugs, and the rise of “soft” power.
