Union Says Lufthansa Ground Staff Will Strike Tuesday
(CTN News) – German airline Lufthansa (LHAG.DE), opens the tab LHAG.DE will be in the midst of its latest round of industrial action as its ground staff demand higher pay.
This is the latest round of industrial action to hit Germany’s transport sector.
According to the union, the strike is scheduled to start at 4 a.m. on Tuesday (0300 GMT) and is scheduled to conclude at 7.10 a.m. on Wednesday (0610 GMT), the union has stated.
As a result, the following airports have been affected: Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Stuttgart.
As the member of the Lufthansa executive board responsible for human resources, Michael Niggemann, said he was disappointed with the strike because the German carrier had made a “far reaching” offer during the negotiations, which Verdi rejected, and it would be an inconvenience both for customers and staff.
As a result of a similar Lufthansa strike at the start of February, about 100,000 passengers were affected, as 900 of the 1,000 planned flights were cancelled.
A number of Lufthansa workers from the ground services department are currently negotiating collective bargaining agreements on behalf of several groups of workers.
It has been reported by various media Lufthansa outlets that Verdi is demanding a wage increase of 12.5% for 25,000 ground staff workers, or at least 500 euros ($544.30) per month more over a 12-month period, plus a one-off payment of 3,000 euros to offset the inflationary effect.
In Germany, the continent’s largest Lufthansa economy, a number of nationwide strikes have affected the air travel, railways and public transport systems.
