PhonePe Launches Indus Appstore in Competition with Google Play Store in India

(CTN News) – PhonePe, a fintech company owned by Walmart Inc., has opened a mobile app shop for Indian users. Indus Appstore, an Android-based store, competes with Google’s Play Store.

PhonePe aims to profit from expanding mobile usage in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, with its latest launch dubbed a “game-changer in India’s digital journey”.

PhonePe’s official press statement states that the Indus Appstore will provide over 200,000 mobile apps and games in 12 Indian languages.

PhonePe will waive app listing fees for developers for one year (until April 1, 2025).

In the first version, developers can utilise any third-party payment mechanism.

According to an official announcement, the Indus Appstore offers over 2 lakh mobile apps and games in 45 categories for Indian users to download.

Users could find these apps easily in 12 Indian languages, providing 95% of Indians’ linguistic choices. The app store also has a fresh new short-video discovery function to make new app discovery more appealing to consumers.

“Indus Appstore offers developers a level playing field to list, distribute, and promote their products in the Indian app ecosystem.” It offers a self-publishing platform, localization services, monitoring and growth tools, and 24/7 customer support.” The PhonePe release is discussed.

According to CEO Sameer Nigam in New Delhi, the PhonePe group is also attempting to form relationships with smartphone manufacturers to be available on most major phone brands by the end of the year.

PhonePe Group’s payments division competes with Ant Group-backed Paytm and Google’s GPay.

According to Sameer Nigam, CEO and Founder of PhonePe, the Indus Appstore promotes healthy competition in the mobile app industry, perhaps leading to a more democratic and robust Indian digital ecosystem. Indus Appstore aims to provide a welcoming digital ecosystem for all Indian users.
