Key Takeaways
- The train driver saw the man walking on the tracks with his back toward the train.
- The driver sounded the horn repeatedly and applied the emergency brakes, but the train could not stop in time.
- The victim had no identification documents, so officials began working to confirm his identity.
The train was an air-conditioned sleeper service traveling south from Chiang Mai when the driver spotted the man ahead on the tracks. According to the initial account, the man continued walking without turning around or moving away, even after the driver sounded the horn several times.
Police Searching for Man’s Identity
Because the train was already close to the man, the driver activated the emergency braking system. However, the train’s size, weight, and speed meant it could not stop before reaching him. The train then struck the man, who died at the scene from severe injuries, including bleeding from his head and nose.
The incident forced the train to stop for about 20 minutes while officials inspected the area and handled the scene. After the inspection, the service continued its journey to Bangkok.
Peeradech Wongkham, chief of Nakhon Lampang Railway Station, joined Lampang rescue workers, an on-duty doctor from Lampang Hospital, and investigators from Mueang Lampang Police Station at the scene.
Officials checked the victim’s belongings but found no identity card or other documents. They are working to establish his identity and determine where he came from. Police will also investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident before proceeding under the law.
