Drug Couriers Nabbed With 2.6 Million Meth Pills in Chiang Rai

Police have arrested two suspected drug couriers in Mae Lao district of Chiang Rai province with more than 2.6 million meth pills (yaba) and one kilogram of ketamine.

The Provincial Police Region 5 commissioner, Pol Lt Gen Piya Tawichai, announced Friday that two suspects had been arrested and that 2.7 million speed pills and 1 kilogram of ketamine had been seized.

Two suspects were identified as Alongkorn Suktaeng, 53, and Kamolthorn Suktaeng, 51, both from Nakhon Pathom.

On Wednesday evening, police stopped a modified refrigerated pickup truck with Bangkok license plates at Pa Tueng checkpoint in Mae Lao district for inspection.

During the inspection, twenty-five fertiliser sacks containing the illicit drugs were discovered in the vehicle driven by Mr Alongkorn. His companion was Ms Kamolthorn.

Both drug couriers were charged with conspiring to possess narcotics of Type 1 (methamphetamine) and Type 2 (ketamine) with the intent to sell.

Drug courier paid 120,000 baht

The arrest came after investigators from Provincial Police Region 5 were tipped off about the smuggling. They found the suspect truck in Mae Sai district in this northern province. As the vehicle headed towards the Muang district, the investigation team requested that the police at the Pa Tueng checkpoint stop it.

Chiang Rai Police say the driver admitted to picking up the drugs from two spots, one in tambon Huai Khrai in Mae Sai and the other in tambon Mae Yao in Muang district of Chiang Mai, for an amount of 120,000 baht. He was directed to deliver them to an agent in Nakhon Pathom, a province in the centre of Thailand.

An investigation of others involved in the drug courier smuggling operation will also be conducted by the arresting team.

According to Pol Lt Gen Piya, since Oct 1 this year, the police have arrested 30 drug suspects and seized over 100 million baht worth of assets from them in Chiang Rai Province.
