CHIANG RAI – A violent shootout between Thai narcotics police and a drug trafficking gang in Chiang Rai’s Mae Suai district ended with one suspect dead and another in custody early Monday morning.
The confrontation occurred after a high-speed chase down Doi Wawi, resulting in the seizure of a massive shipment of illegal drugs. While police successfully intercepted the primary transport vehicle, a second “scout” car carrying two additional suspects managed to escape, sparking a massive manhunt across the northern province.
The incident began when officers from the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) received a tip-off about a large shipment of narcotics moving from the border highlands toward the Thai interior. Police spotted two suspicious pickup trucks descending from the Doi Wawi area, a known transit route for illicit goods.
When officers attempted to intercept the vehicles near the junction leading to Highway 118, the suspects refused to stop. According to local reports from Manager Online, the traffickers opened fire on the police to clear a path for escape. This triggered a brief but intense exchange of gunfire between the authorities and the criminals.
Casualties and Arrests at the Scene
Once the gunfire ceased, police inspected the primary vehicle, a pickup truck that had been forced to a halt. The following details were confirmed at the scene:
- One Deceased: A male suspect inside the truck was found dead from gunshot wounds sustained during the shootout.
- One Arrested: A second male suspect was apprehended at the site and taken into police custody for interrogation.
- The Escape: A second vehicle, described as a “lead car,” used to scout for checkpoints, sped away from the scene. It is believed to contain at least two more individuals.
Large-Scale Manhunt Underway
Following the clash, Pol. Col. Kritsada Ngamjit, Superintendent of the Mae Suai Police Station, dispatched additional units to support the NSB. The fugitive vehicle was last seen heading toward the Chedi Luang sub-district.
Local checkpoints have been alerted, and authorities are combing the rugged terrain of Mae Suai. Investigators believe the gang is part of a larger network distributing drugs from the Golden Triangle region into central Thailand.
The mountains of Chiang Rai, particularly areas like Doi Wawi, present a significant challenge for law enforcement. The terrain is steep and features numerous “natural” border crossings that smugglers exploit.
This latest crackdown is part of a broader national effort to curb the flow of narcotics, which officials link to rising public safety concerns and healthcare burdens. By disrupting these supply chains, the Thai government aims to reduce drug-related crime in urban centers like Bangkok.
