The parents of an 8-year-old boy “Nong Nice” who claims he’s the reincarnated son of Lord Buddha have been ordered by a Thai court to take him to a psychiatrist and stop promoting he has special powers on social media.
The Juvenile and Family Court on Wednesday ordered a couple immediately stop promoting the boy on social media and end their version of Lord Buddha’s teachings to followers.
The court’s order comes after a legal petition lodged by Thailand’s Social Development and Human Security authorities who sought to protect the boy under the Child Protection Act 2003.
The court order prohibits all promoting of their son on any media channels and social media platforms, that Nong Nice had been Lord Buddha’s son in a past life and that he possessed magical abilities connected to the Naga, a gigantic serpent from Thai mythology.
The court also banned his parents from publicizing distorted Buddhist teachings or any versions of their teachings that aren’t in line with the Tripitaka, which are the ancient collections of Buddhist sacred scriptures.
The parents must also take the boy to a psychiatrist within 15 days, and report to a court appointed representative for six months.
All activities by the couple to promoted Nong Nice as the reincarnated son of Lord Buddha were also ordered banned, effective immediately.
Ms. Chonlada Chanasirattanakun, from the social development and human security, said her office would try to work with the parents to assure the court order is implemented accordingly. She said that should the parents disobey the court’s order they would face serious legal repercussions.
The boy’s mother, who was identified only as, Natthaphon, said she wasn’t surprised by the Family Court’s decision because the was only protecting her son’s welfare. She told Thai media that she believed the Judges decision was based on fake pictures and doctored videos.
She said that altered images and videos possibly gave the Judge the wrong impression that her son was being abused by them for financial gain.
She said she and her husband have instructed their lawyers to appeal the court’s order, adding that she had evidence that would the court that she and her husband had never used their son for their personal own gain.
When asked by reporters why she never presented such evidence to the Judge before hand she refused to comment.
