5 Dead After Groom Shoots Bride, Her Family, Then Himself at Wedding in Thailand

According to authorities, a groom went on a shooting rampage at his own wedding reception on Saturday night, killing four people, including the bride, and gravely injuring another before shooting himself dead with a pistol.

Chaturong Suksuk, a crippled former ranger and Paralympic athlete, was named as the shooter.

The terrible occurrence happened about 11.25 p.m. at a residence in Moo 1 village in tambon Wang Nam Khieo, Wang Nam Khieo district, where a wedding party was being hosted for Chaturong, 29, and Kanchana Pachunthuek, 44.

Wang Nam Khieo police were dispatched to the scene to conduct an investigation.

A traditional wedding ceremony was held at the house between Chaturong and Kanchana on Saturday morning, followed by a feast. Chaturong was a former paramilitary ranger who had a handicap in his leg as a result of an incident while on duty.

They had been living together as a couple for three years before deciding to marry. Chaturong was 15 years the bride’s junior.

That night, guests and family from both sides attended a wedding reception. During the party, guests and relatives noticed Chaturong was not as happy as one could assume.

Chaturong unexpectedly exited the celebration and headed to his car late at night. Soon after, he returned with a pistol and opened fire, killing the bride, her mother, Kingthong Klajoho, 62, her younger sister, Kornnipa Manato, 38, and a guest, Thong Nonkhunthod, 50. Another visitor, Bamrung Chatherat, 28, suffered significant injuries.

Chaturong then fatally shot himself. He perished in an instant.

The injured victim, Mr Bamrung, was taken to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital.

Wang Nam Khieo police chief Pol Col Roongjroj Tang-amnuay stated 11 expended rounds of 9mm ammunition were collected from the scene of the incident.

Chaturong, he added, was a former marine soldier assigned to the Sattahip naval facility in Chon Buri. He became crippled after having one of his legs ran over by a train and severed in an accident.

He won a silver medal in swimming as a member of Thailand’s impaired athletes at the 11th Asean Para Games in Indonesia in 2022. Chaturong was also named to the list of challenged athletes who will compete in the World Abilitysport Games 2023, which will take place in Nakhon Ratchasima from December 1 to 9.

Police were looking into the motive for the killings.
