What To Do After a Car Accident

It can be terrifying to be in a car accident when you are merely trying to get safely to a familiar destination.

The problem is that you get into a comfort zone when you get close to your home because you drive on them so often.

This can result in decreased alertness levels and a higher incidence of accidents.

Sometimes you can avoid a car accident by staying alert, but other times you can’t, especially if it’s someone else’s fault. In the article below, we give you insight into what steps you should take after you are in a car accident, so keep reading.

Call Emergency Services

The first thing you or the folks who witnessed the accident would probably do is call the emergency services. If the car accident is particularly serious, then this step cannot be skipped.

When you call emergency services, you are doing so in case there is a fire due to a car accident, or major injuries that need to be looked at.

Head injuries are quite common in serious car accidents and they need to get looked at immediately to prevent brain damage or even death.

As soon as emergency services get contacted, the police will come along as well, to ensure that there’s no illegal driving activity happening as well.

File a Police Report

While the police are there, if you are coherent enough, you can file a police report with them. If you aren’t well enough and are taken to the hospital, then your loved ones can file the report for you, or you can do it once you leave the hospital.

It’s important to get everything on record as soon as possible, especially if it’s not your fault and you want to sue the opposing party for negligence or dangerous driving.

Contact Your Insurance Company

The insurance company representative will help file the claim for you, once you contact them and let them know that an accident has occurred. They will want to know the details of the accident and also who was at fault.

Give them factual information only and don’t start blaming the other party. The insurance company rep is on your side so there’s no need to start doing anything to antagonize or aggravate them.

They will fill out the necessary paperwork for you and also contact a lawyer in case there’s a need to go to court if that benefit is included in your insurance contract.

Find and Hire an Accident Lawyer

If your insurance company will not pay for an accident lawyer for whatever reason, you must find and hire one for yourself.

Find a local wrongful death accident lawyer if there was a fatality in the accident, so you can get properly compensated for the loss of losing a loved one.

Don’t just sit back and let grief or sadness take over. Action is what’s necessary at the moment and the accident lawyer can help you take the right steps.

Collect Photographic Evidence

Hopefully, you didn’t get too injured in the accident. If you did, then you should leave this step up to whoever was in the car with you. Or to witnesses, the police, or the insurance rep.

It’s important to gather photographic evidence of the accident, especially if you are trying to prove that it wasn’t your fault.

Take photographs of the two vehicles, of the surrounding areas, of any damage to the cars, and anything else of interest in the car accident area.

Also, when you visit a medical professional at the hospital or elsewhere, then make sure they take photographs of all your injuries.

This will get added to the medical report and also to the case notes that your accident lawyer will build on your behalf.

Speak to Witnesses

Unless you were driving at night in the middle of nowhere, there will probably be other people around who witnessed the accident.

It’s important to get their contact information so you can call them later and ask them to describe the accident.

Do this as soon as possible, before their memories fade and they forget what happened.

If you are not up for calling witnesses yourself, then let the insurance rep or your accident lawyer do this for you.

Stay Calm and Optimistic

Above all, no matter what kind of car accident you were in, you need to remain calm and steady. There’s no need to get aggravated, aggressive, or panicky.

If the accident wasn’t your fault, then you will get the compensation you deserve. Even more so, if you take all the steps above, you have nothing to worry about.

A car accident, although not a common thing, is becoming more common as time goes by. So you will need to learn to take it as just one more thing you need to deal with in this battle called life.

A Car Accident Can Throw You off Balance

It’s not like anyone is prepared to deal with the negative consequences of being in a car accident. It throws everyone off kilter for a bit.

But if you follow the steps in the article above, and do everything in a relaxed and tranquil fashion, you will be able to get past this hurdle as well.
