Thai PM Addresses Key Issues in Bangkok: Taxi Fares, Illegal Tour Guides, and PM 2.5 Pollution

(CTN News) – On the 23rd of February, 2024, at 8:50 AM, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, Governor of Bangkok Chadchart Sittipunt, and representatives from various agencies met to discuss the growth of Bangkok City.

Throughout the conversation, Srettha brought up several concerns regarding the growth of Bangkok. Taxi drivers charging extra without utilising metre devices was one of the most prominent problems that could be found.

Srettha stated that it is essential to have fair and transparent fares, and she urged the Minister of Transport to work together to bring about improvements in this area that would benefit drivers and passengers.

Srettha referred to the unauthorised tour guides operating in the Bangkok region as a cancerous issue undermining Thailand’s reputation as a tourist destination. A directive was given by Srettha to the commissioner general of the Royal Thai Police on implementing stringent measures to address the issue.

According to Shrestha, international tourists need to experience comfort and safety without coming into contact with unlicensed and potentially dangerous guides.

Moreover, Srettha brought attention to the extremely important problem of PM 2.5 pollution. In response to the pollution situation, the Governor recently implemented a policy allowing employees to work from home, resulting in constructive outcomes.

To effectively manage the PM 2.5 situation, it is essential to work with all government sectors. According to Srettha, it is important to consider the necessity of more investment to address the impact of air pollution on public health.

Other themes related to the development of Bangkok City were considered during the meeting. These included the transit system, the underground cable network, concerns with traffic congestion, and many other topics.
