In northern Thailand’s Chiang Mai province, the flood situation has worsened as water levels continue to rise and spread over a larger area. Many communities and commercial districts have been flooded, causing significant hardship for residents.
This region faces its second round of flooding in just one week, with impacts as severe as the first. In a striking development, the busy streets of the city’s famous Night Bazaar, filled with shops and popular hotels, have been inundated, with water levels rising between 50 and 70 centimeters.
Local businesses were unprepared for the sudden surge in water. Many shop owners have expressed concerns about potential damage to their merchandise due to the rising water and the uncertainty of whether the flood will worsen.
After the recent flooding, the Ping River peaked at 4.81 meters. This level, while slightly lower than the previous flood, has still caused major flooding, affecting many communities within a one-kilometer radius, including a local golf course.
All 13 buildings designated for police housing were flooded, with water levels exceeding one meter. Since Friday morning, residents have been evacuating steadily due to the disruption of water and electricity services. Authorities have sent boats to rescue those who are stranded.
In a decisive action, Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has mobilized military personnel to assist with flood relief operations in the area. Officials must closely monitor the situation, use high-pressure water pumps, and move vehicles to safe locations.
Officials have begun evacuating tourists to safer areas to address the rising floodwaters. Despite the conditions, several hotels remain open, offering care and accommodation for visitors who choose to stay.
Chiang Mai International Airport is still operational, but according to a Facebook statement, passengers should plan for an extra two to three hours of travel time to account for possible delays.
