LAMPANG — A devastating multi-vehicle accident turned a busy holiday highway into a scene of wreckage and grief on Friday afternoon. The incident, involving nine vehicles, occurred on the Thoen-Lampang road, marking a somber start to the “Seven Dangerous Days” of the Songkran festival period.
Initial reports from local authorities confirm that two people have died, and at least six others were injured when a heavy-duty trailer truck failed to stop in time, slamming into a line of cars slowing down for a construction bypass.
The accident took place around 3:00 PM on April 11, 2026. The site of the crash was a four-lane section of Highway 1 (KM 600+900), a stretch that had recently been completed but required traffic to merge into a bypass.
Witnesses and investigators state that traffic had begun to bottleneck as vehicles slowed to enter the detour. An Isuzu trailer truck, registered in Saraburi, reportedly suffered a braking failure or was unable to decelerate fast enough. It plowed into the rear of several pickup trucks and sedans, triggering a violent chain reaction.
The force of the impact was so severe that one vehicle was flipped upside down, coming to rest in the middle of the highway, while others were crushed between the larger trucks.

Lampang Rescue Efforts and Casualties
Emergency responders from local rescue foundations and medical teams from nearby hospitals rushed to the scene. Because several victims were pinned inside the mangled remains of their cars, rescue workers had to use hydraulic “jaws of life” to cut through the metal.
The toll of the accident as of Friday evening includes:
- Two Confirmed Fatalities: The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of their families.
- Six Injured Victims: At least six people were transported to the hospital with varying degrees of injuries.
- A “Miracle” Escape: Among the survivors was a three-year-old child who was pulled from one of the wrecked cars with only minor injuries, a moment that provided a small glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy.
Vehicles Involved in the Pileup
The scale of the crash has shocked the local community. The nine vehicles caught in the wreckage include a mix of commercial trucks and family transport:
- An Isuzu trailer truck (the primary vehicle in the collision).
- Two Honda sedans (silver).
- A black Honda (Bangkok plates).
- A Mazda car (Chiang Mai plates).
- A white Toyota Avanza (Bangkok plates).
- A white Honda sedan (found overturned).
- A black MG sedan (Bangkok plates).
- A white Volkswagen Caravelle van.
Safety Concerns During Songkran
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers on Thai roads during the Songkran holiday. Millions of people travel across the country to return to their hometowns, leading to heavy congestion and a spike in road accidents.
Authorities have been urging drivers to inspect their vehicles—especially braking systems—before long trips and to remain vigilant in construction zones. The “Seven Dangerous Days” safety campaign typically sees increased police checkpoints, but local officials admit that high speeds and heavy cargo loads remain a deadly combination.
Following the rescue of the injured, Lampang police worked for several hours to clear the debris and reopen the highway to holiday traffic. Investigators are currently questioning the driver of the Saraburi trailer truck to determine if the crash was caused by mechanical failure or driver negligence.
As the Songkran festivities begin, this tragedy in Lampang highlights the critical need for road safety awareness. Families traveling through the northern provinces are advised to exercise extreme caution, especially near construction sites and bypasses where traffic patterns can change abruptly.
