CHIANG RAI – On May 12, 2026, police officers in the Mae Chan District of Chiang Rai Province successfully apprehended a major drug dealer after a dramatic three-hour standoff that saw the suspect open fire on law enforcement before barricading himself inside a resident’s bathroom.
The suspect, identified as 54-year-old Mr. Aja Kala, was targeted in a sting operation by the “Night Wolves” investigative team of the Mae Chan Police Station. The operation turned dangerous when the suspect attempted to shoot his way to freedom, eventually fleeing into a home occupied by elderly residents and a young child, sparking fear throughout the local community.
The high-stakes confrontation began when undercover officers moved in to arrest Mr. Aja, a known figure in the regional drug trade. According to official reports from Thairath, the suspect realized he was being cornered and drew a firearm, discharging shots at the officers to create an escape route.
In the ensuing chaos, Mr. Aja fled toward a nearby residential property in Ban Kao Lang. He initially tried to leap over a tall perimeter wall at the back of the property, but found the height insurmountable. Trapped and desperate, he retreated into an outdoor bathroom located on the premises, clutching his weapon as police quickly surrounded the area.
A Family’s Terrifying Experience
The homeowner, 32-year-old Mr. Praphan Kala, was away on an errand when the drama unfolded. He returned home in a state of panic after hearing that a gunman had invaded his property. His concern was for his vulnerable family members who were inside the main house at the time:
- His 64-year-old mother
- His 70-year-old aunt
- His 17-month-old nephew
Thankfully, the family members acted with incredible speed. As the suspect ducked into the outdoor bathroom, the family rushed into the main house and securely locked all doors and windows. This quick thinking prevented the suspect from taking hostages or entering the living quarters.
As the standoff stretched into its third hour, Pol. Maj. Gen. Manop Senakul, Commander of Chiang Rai Provincial Police, oversaw a tactical response involving the 191 patrol unit. To avoid a lethal outcome, authorities brought in the suspect’s wife and son to help negotiate.
The scene remained tense as Mr. Aja expressed extreme stress, pleading with the police not to kill him. In a bizarre final request, the suspect reportedly asked to use heroin one last time before surrendering. Following this, he discarded his firearm, raised his hands, and was taken into custody without further violence.
The Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
Following the arrest, investigators searched the flight path and the bathroom area. They recovered several items of evidence, including:
- A quantity of methamphetamine pills (Yaba)
- Packages of white powder (Heroin)
- The firearm used to attack the officers
Mr. Aja has been transported to the Mae Chan Police Station for further interrogation and processing. He faces multiple serious charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, possession of Class 1 narcotics with intent to sell, and illegal possession of a firearm.
While the community of Mae Chan is shaken, the local residents expressed deep relief that the specialized units managed to end the situation without any injuries to the civilians or the officers involved.
