CHIANG RAI- In a significant late-night operation, local police and security volunteers in Chiang Rai successfully intercepted a major drug shipment early Sunday morning. Authorities arrested three suspects—one man and two women—after discovering seven large sacks filled with 1,600,000 meth pills hidden in the back of a pickup truck.
The bust occurred between the late hours of Saturday, April 25, and the early hours of Sunday, April 26, at a strategic checkpoint in the Rim Kok sub-district of Mueang Chiang Rai. Police had been monitoring the area following intelligence reports that a drug trafficking syndicate was planning to move a large quantity of illicit substances from the Thai-Myanmar border toward Phayao province.

Intelligence-Led Operation Near the Border
The operation was spearheaded by the 4th Yothin Patrol Unit from the Mueang Chiang Rai District Office. Acting on credible leads, officers established a checkpoint on the Wiang Burapha Road, which serves as a vital link to the eastern bypass road in front of the Chiang Rai Provincial Volunteer Defense Corps headquarters.
Security forces remained on high alert throughout the night, anticipating the arrival of a suspicious vehicle described in previous intelligence briefings. According to official reports from MGR Online, the team’s persistence paid off when a suspicious vehicle matching the description appeared on the horizon heading south from the border region.
As the vehicle approached the checkpoint, the driver exhibited signs of hesitation that immediately alerted the officers on duty. Instead of maintaining speed, the white pickup truck—bearing Chiang Mai license plates—slowed down significantly before attempting to pull over into a dark, unlit area on the roadside just short of the inspection point.
Suspecting an attempt to evade the search or dispose of evidence, officers moved in to investigate. Upon reaching the vehicle, they identified the driver as Mr. Paiboon, 26. He was accompanied by two female passengers: Mrs. Kanjana, 46, and Ms. Nam-oi, 34.

Evidence Seized and Suspects Detained
A thorough search of the vehicle’s cargo bed revealed the scale of the operation. Officers discovered seven large sacks containing a massive quantity of narcotics. While the exact pill count is undergoing official verification by forensic teams, the volume of the haul suggests a major blow to local trafficking networks.
The key details of the seizure include:
- The Vehicle: A white pickup truck registered in Chiang Mai.
- The Cargo: Seven large, heavy-duty sacks found in the rear of the truck.
- The Route: The suspects were traveling from the northern border area of Chiang Rai with an intended destination in Phayao.
- The Suspects: Three individuals currently in custody for questioning.
Following the initial arrest, the suspects and the seized evidence were transported to the Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station for formal processing. Investigators are currently working to determine the origin of the drugs and the specific criminal organization responsible for the shipment.
Authorities believe this seizure is part of a larger effort by regional syndicates to move narcotics from the Golden Triangle region into the interior provinces of Thailand. Regional security has been tightened across northern border checkpoints as police anticipate further attempts to move illicit goods during the current period of increased surveillance.
The successful interception highlights the effectiveness of the “Yothin” patrol units and the collaboration between provincial administrative officers and local police in combatting the drug trade in northern Thailand.
