MAE HONG SON – A severe accident on a winding mountain road near Ban Rak Thai left seven Chiang Mai tourists injured, two seriously. The incident happened late Monday afternoon, as the group was returning from a trip to the popular village known for its lush scenery during the rainy season.
The tourists, driving a four-door automatic pickup, were unfamiliar with the steep and twisting route along Rural Road 4001 between Mae Hong Son and Ban Rak Thai in Mok Cham Pae subdistrict in Mae Hong Son.
On the way down, the driver did not shift to a lower gear, which caused the brakes to overheat and fail just before a tight curve. Losing control, the driver steered into a new-style roller guardrail, which finally brought the vehicle to a stop. The front of the vehicle was badly damaged.
Police officers at the scene said the driver, a woman, managed to avoid a worse disaster by keeping calm and steering into the guardrail. Without her quick thinking, the vehicle could have gone off the edge, which has happened in similar incidents before.
Local rescue teams and emergency medical staff from Srisangwan Hospital responded quickly, rushing all seven injured tourists to the hospital. Two had serious injuries, but all received prompt treatment.
Upon checking, officials found the automatic gear shift was still in position “D” (Drive), not set to a lower gear. Without help from the engine to slow the vehicle on steep slopes, the brakes overheated and failed.
Police are reminding drivers, especially tourists using automatic vehicles in mountainous areas like Mae Hong Son, to learn how to use gears properly. Using low gear on steep descents helps prevent brake failure and keeps everyone safe.
The incident is still under investigation as authorities review the cause and assess the damage.
