(CTN News) – The Thai Transport Ministry has revealed plans to improve Bangkok Port, which is located in the capital’s Khlong Toei area, putting an end to earlier concerns about its relocation. The development approach will prioritise vertical extension to maximise land utilisation within the existing area.

Manaporn Charoensri, Deputy Transport Minister, said that the decision was made in response to an instruction from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, which involved the Office of the Council of State (OCS) and the National Economics and Social Development Council (NESDC).

These agencies will work with the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) to perform a feasibility study on creating vertical residential developments to serve the local populations surrounding the port.

The PAT will also look into extending commercial spaces to help the logistics industry while minimising environmental effect. The proposed improvements include mixed-use and office buildings, as well as facilities for large cruise ships, to stimulate tourism and strengthen the port’s position as an important logistics hub along the Chao Phraya River.

The ambitious expansion plan for Bangkok Port, described in PAT’s master plan, envisions an investment of more than 100 billion baht spread across five distinct zones.

These include administrative areas, a “smart port,” a cruise terminal with related commercial spaces, a sports complex with a public park, and designated future development sites ready for e-commerce and other logistics activities.
