AYUTTHAYA – A local community is in mourning after a 35-year-old man allegedly fueled by narcotics embarked on a terrifying shooting spree in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
The random violence claimed the life of a 44-year-old schoolteacher who was shot while driving with her two young children. Local authorities have apprehended the suspect, identified as Mr. Sarawut, who now faces several heavy charges, including murder and illegal possession of drugs.
A Sunday Afternoon Turned Deadly
The peaceful atmosphere of the Lat Bua Luang district was shattered when a gunman began firing indiscriminately at passing vehicles. According to reports from Thairath, the primary victim was Ms. Papatsara Ruangrit, a dedicated teacher at Wat Sukantharam School.
Ms. Papatsara was traveling with her relatives and her two children when the suspect opened fire on her car. The victim’s brother, Mr. Thanakorn Ruangrit, shared that his niece called him in a panic, crying that her mother had been shot. Although the family initially hoped the injury was minor, Ms. Papatsara succumbed to her wounds shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Details of the Arrest and Charges
Following the shooting, local police from the Lat Bua Luang Police Station quickly moved to secure the area and track down the shooter. The suspect had fled the scene in a state of panic but was eventually intercepted. Forensic teams have since collected DNA samples, fingerprints, and gunpowder residue from the 35-year-old suspect to match with the 9mm handgun used in the crime.
Mr. Sarawut is currently being held as investigators compile a comprehensive case against him. The police have officially filed the following charges:
- Possession of an Illegal Firearm: Carrying a weapon and ammunition without a permit.
- Public Weapon Carriage: Carrying a firearm in a public place without a valid reason.
- Discharging a Firearm in Public: Firing a weapon in a residential area without cause.
- Drug Possession: Illegal possession of Type 1 narcotics (methamphetamine).
- Murder: Causing the death of another person through intentional violence.
The Impact on the Community
The loss of Ms. Papatsara has left a deep void in the local education system and her family. Having served as a teacher for only four years, she was known for her dedication to her students at Wat Sukantharam School. Her family is currently preparing to hold funeral rites at Wat Rat Bamrung in the Lat Bua Luang district.
Residents and relatives of the victims gathered at the police station on Sunday evening, expressing their grief and anger. Many were shocked by the senseless nature of the attack, noting that the victims were completely innocent bystanders who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Several other vehicles in the area were also reportedly hit by gunfire, though no other fatalities were confirmed in the immediate aftermath.
Investigation Continues
The Royal Thai Police are continuing their investigation into the suspect’s motives, though initial findings strongly suggest the influence of methamphetamine played a critical role in the “madman” style rampage. Officers are looking into how the suspect obtained the illegal weapon and whether there were any warning signs prior to the shooting.
This incident has once again sparked a national conversation regarding gun control and the persistent issue of drug-related violence in provincial Thailand. For now, a family is left to pick up the pieces of a life shattered in a few moments of inexplicable chaos.
