Actor Timothy Busfield Accused of Child Sexual Abuse

NEW MEXICO – Emmy Award-winning actor and director Timothy Busfield, known for Thirtysomething, Field of Dreams, and The West Wing, is facing a major criminal case in New Mexico. Albuquerque authorities issued an arrest warrant on January 9, 2026.

The warrant lists two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse. Investigators say the accusations involve two young boys who worked as child actors on the Fox series The Cleaning Lady, where Busfield directed episodes.

The case has drawn intense attention in the entertainment industry, where Busfield has worked for decades. He won a Primetime Emmy in 1991 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for playing Elliot Weston on Thirtysomething. In recent years, he directed multiple episodes of The Cleaning Lady, a Fox crime drama starring Élodie Yung and produced by Warner Bros. Television. The series was canceled in June 2025.

The allegations

The arrest warrant and an affidavit tied to the case, signed by Albuquerque Police Department officer Marvin Kirk Brown, describe claims involving two brothers identified only by initials, SL and VL. The children were about 7 and 8 years old when the first alleged incidents occurred, according to court records. The documents say the boys met Busfield after he joined The Cleaning Lady as a director in late 2022.

Investigators describe what they believe was a grooming pattern. The affidavit says Busfield asked the children to call him “Uncle Tim” and built a close bond with the family. The documents also say the children were invited to gatherings away from the set, and that Busfield’s wife, actress Melissa Gilbert, bought Christmas gifts for the boys. Authorities say those actions helped create familiarity and trust.

According to the filings, the contact started as playful behavior, including tickling on the stomach and legs, then progressed to touching that the children described as inappropriate. One child told investigators Busfield touched his “poop” and “pee” areas (which the child used to describe buttocks and genitals) over clothing.

The affidavit claims the touching happened more than once. The first reported incident was said to have happened when the child was 7, after a scene on set, and continued at times through spring 2024.

Court records say the alleged conduct mainly occurred at the show’s Albuquerque set near Alameda Boulevard and Interstate 25. The affidavit also references a bedroom area on the production set as one of the locations mentioned in the children’s accounts.

One child reportedly said he didn’t speak up because Busfield was the director and he feared making him angry. The other child reportedly stayed quiet because he didn’t want to get in trouble. After the disclosures, one child was diagnosed with moderate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety, including nightmares connected to the alleged incidents, according to the affidavit.

How the investigation developed

Police first became involved in November 2024. A doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital contacted the Albuquerque Police Department about possible abuse concerns, according to the case documents.

The children’s father had reportedly been told by a local law firm to seek medical care. At that point, the children described unwanted tickling but did not report sexual contact, and police concluded the information did not support immediate charges.

The case returned to focus in September 2025 when, according to the affidavit, one boy told a counselor that Timothy Busfield had touched his penis and bottom. On October 3, 2025, the boy’s mother filed a police report and also contacted Child Protective Services. The report alleged the conduct took place between November 2022 and spring 2024.

Investigators then arranged new forensic interviews around Halloween 2025. In those interviews, the children reportedly gave more details about the touching described in the warrant.

Police also interviewed Busfield by phone in November 2025, according to court records. The affidavit says he told investigators it was “highly likely” he had picked up and playfully tickled the boys, but he denied any sexual intent.

He also suggested the claims could be linked to anger from the parents after the children were not brought back for the show’s final season. The affidavit states he referenced past talk about him being “handsy” with women on set.

Separately, Warner Bros. Television reviewed a complaint in 2025 tied to an anonymous SAG-AFTRA report involving a different incident dated December 2024, according to the information summarized in the case coverage. The studio reportedly said it could not confirm the claims. Warner Bros. Television has said it takes allegations seriously and will cooperate with law enforcement.

Timothy Busfield’s Responses and Public Comments

Timothy Busfield has not released a public statement since the arrest warrant was issued. His representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment, based on reports around the warrant. During the police interview described in the affidavit, he maintained that any physical contact was innocent and meant as play.

There have not been widely reported public statements from friends or relatives addressing these specific charges. The affidavit mentions gift-giving tied to Busfield’s wife, Melissa Gilbert, though she has not made a public comment about the case.

Some attention has also focused on Gilbert’s late-2025 social posts condemning child sexual abuse, shared weeks before the warrant became public, though those posts did not reference this case. The boys’ family has not spoken publicly, which is common in cases involving minors.

With an active warrant, Busfield is expected to turn himself in or be taken into custody. As of January 11, 2026, public court records indicated he had not yet been arrested. If he is convicted, he could face substantial prison time in New Mexico because the charges involve children under 13.

The allegations have renewed concerns about child safety on TV and film sets, where adults and minors often work in close quarters under long production days. The reports about this case have also pointed to earlier accusations from Timothy Busfield’s past, including a 1994 lawsuit filed by a 17-year-old extra from Little Big League that was settled after Timothy Busfield countersued for defamation, plus another allegation reported in 2012 that did not lead to charges.
