CHIANG RAI – The Department of Rural Roads has reported steady progress on the underpass and road upgrade at the Government Complex junction on Rural Road CHR.1023 in Mueang District, Chiang Rai.

The project, worth more than 849 million baht, is 31% complete and ahead of schedule. Full completion is expected in 2027. The works aim to ease traffic in front of Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport and strengthen transport links to support trade and tourism across the upper North.

Pichit Hunsiri, Director-General of the Department of Rural Roads, said construction is underway on the underpass structure and reinforced concrete retaining walls. Once finished in 2027, the project will improve traffic flow at this busy junction and provide better connections to the airport.

The scheme targets the long-standing bottleneck on CHR.1023 near the airport and is designed to support sustainable growth in nearby communities. The plan includes a four-lane underpass, two lanes each way, with a total length of 425.50 metres.

It also covers the widening of the bridge over the Kok River to provide broader traffic lanes along a 410 metre stretch.

Road improvements at the Government Complex junction on CHR.1023 are part of the package, along with new street lighting and other utilities. The total work length is 1.635 kilometres, with a construction budget of 849.800 million baht.

The department has instructed contractors and site supervisors to prioritize safety during construction. Clear warning signs, speed reduction signs, flashing lights and other safety measures are being installed to keep road users safe while work continues.
