Continuous rain in Chiang Rai, flash floods inundate Ban Doi-Mae Yao Road

CHIANG RAI – On Wednesday at 4.00 pm, flooding swept across the road between Ban Doi and Mae Yao in Mae Yao Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Rai District. Traffic on this route was disrupted, making it difficult for small vehicles to pass.

Drivers were advised to avoid this road for now. Local disaster prevention and relief officials responded quickly, heading out to help residents. They are keeping a close watch on the situation to make sure travel and local communities stay safe.

The Chiang Rai Hydrology Office warned of possible flooding downstream from the Mae Chang Khao Reservoir in Pa Ngiew Subdistrict, Wiang Pa Pao District. As of 27 August, the reservoir was at full capacity. Patrol 15 brought in pumps to drain water and lower the risk.  Authorities in Wiang Pa Pao are getting ready for any changes.

Chiang Rai’s disaster relief office gave a flood update at 6.30 pm. Heavy rain hit several parts of the province, leading to high rainfall totals. The Santikiri Station in Mae Salong Nok Subdistrict, Mae Fa Luang District, recorded 102.5 mm of rain.

At Chiang Rai Station in Ban Du Subdistrict, 98.0 mm was measured. Rain continued in districts such as Mae Fa Luang, Wiang Pa Pao, Mueang Chiang Rai, Mae Sai, Mae Suai, Wiang Kaen, Mae Chan, Thoeng, Chiang Saen, Khun Tan, and Wiang Chiang Rung.

Recent water level checks found higher levels at several sites, but the rivers remained below flood stage. At Ban Hua Saphan Station in Pa Sang Subdistrict, Mae Chan District, the water was 0.10 metres below the bank.

The First Friendship Bridge station in Mae Sai Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, measured 0.40 metres below the bank. Mae Phung canal in Pa Ngae Subdistrict, Pa Daet District, was 1.06 metres below the bank.

Flooding Chiang Rai

In Mueang Chiang Rai District, reports showed flash flooding and standing water in many places, including:

  • The Ban Doi to Mae Yao route in Mae Yao Subdistrict still had stable water levels. Pickups could pass, but small cars could not.
  • The southbound Phahonyothin Road near the Pho Khun junction in Rop Wiang Subdistrict had minor flooding, but traffic could still move.
  • Klang Wiang Road near Homranjuan shop in Rim Kok Subdistrict had some flooding, but the road stayed usable.
  • The lane to Wat Huay Pla Kang (behind Lallita Café) had flash flooding, though vehicles could still get through.

In Mae Suai District, a landslide hit Ban Mai Mae Yang Min School in Moo 11, Si Thoi Subdistrict. The wall in front of a classroom block collapsed, about five metres wide, sending mud and debris into one classroom and causing damage.

Chiang Rai’s disaster relief team has told all agencies to prepare equipment, machines, and staff to help people at any time of day or night. Right now, the sky remains overcast and further rainfall is likely.
