Provincial Police Division 5 in Chiang Rai have reported the seizure of more than 8.75 million methamphetamine pills after they stopped a white Nissan pickup truck with Chiang Mai license plates transporting drugs on the Chiang Saen-Chiang Khong Road.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Kritthapol Yisakorn, Commander of Provincial Police Region 5, told CTN News that undercover officers received information that a drug trafficking gang would transport a large amount of drugs from the Mekong River border, in the areas of Chiang Saen and Chiang Khong Districts, Chiang Rai Province.

The informant told undercover police officers that the drug trafficking gang was using a white Nissan pickup truck with Chiang Mai license plates to transport drugs. The officers notified provincial command that relayed the information to relevant checkpoints throughout Chiang Rai Province. The truck and driver were stopped on the road in Chiang Khong District coming from Chiang Saen District.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Kritthapol said the driver used the Mekong River border route to Chiang Saen, he then drove back the same way. The officers assumed that the car had already been transporting drugs, so they intercepted it on the Chiang Saen-Chiang Khong road in Wiang Subdistrict, Chiang Khong District.

Upon inspection of the pickup they found 35 sacks loaded on the back seat, containing approximately 8.75 million methamphetamine pills. The driver was identified Mr. Wiraphon, (last name withheld) a resident of Thoeng District, Chiang Rai Province. Mr. Wiraphon was arrested an taken to the Chiang Khong District police station for legal proceedings and further legal action.
