Police in Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai, have seized 6 million methamphetamine pills and arrested two men after a vehicle chase through Mae Sai District to Chiang Saen District of Chiang Rai Province.

On September 3, 2014, Chiang Saen police officers, under the direction of Pol. Maj. Gen. Manop Senakul, Commander of Chiang Rai Provincial Police, and Pol. Col. Thanat Chummano, Superintendent of Chiang Saen Police Station, was notified that a drug trafficking group was going to transport a large number of methamphetamine pills across the Thai-Myanmar border into the area.

They, therefore, ordered the police to keep watch on the Mae Sai-Chiang Saen border road.

Around 10 a.m., a black Ford Everest with a Phrae license plate was discovered while traveling from Mae Sai District to Chiang Saen District. The police attempted to intercept it near Wiang Kaew Village, Village No. 5, Tambon Sri Don Mueang, Amphoe Chiang Saen.

However, the Ford Everest skipped the road around Wat Phra That Doi Wiang Kaew and rapidly passed through the checkpoint to the Wiang Chiang Saen Subdistrict Municipality.

The police officers chased the vehicle to Ban Huai Kiang, Village No. 8, Tambon Wiang, Amphoe Chiang Saen, where the vehicle stopped, and the driver and two passengers fled on foot.

Officers arrested two suspects, Mr. Phongsak, aged 23, and Mr. Narongdet, aged 22, from Chiang Rai. The other passenger escaped; however, police are aware of the man’s identity, and an arrest warrant has been issued.

A search of the vehicle found 30 black plastic, each bag containing approximately 200,000 methamphetamine pills, totaling approximately 6,000,000 methamphetamine pills. Initial investigations revealed that a capitalist in Tachilek District, Myanmar, adjacent to Mae Sai District, hired the methamphetamine trafficking network.

Each person was paid 300,000 baht and received 40,000 baht in advance to be delivered to Mae Chan District, Chiang Rai Province.

Police took them into custody for legal proceedings at Chiang Saen Police Station.
