CHIANG RAI – Thailand’s northern and northeastern regions are currently experiencing cooler weather. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) reported that a weak high-pressure system from China now covers these areas.
Meanwhile, southerly and southeasterly winds are weakening across the lower Northeast, the East, and the Central region, which includes Bangkok. This change means less widespread rain. Only isolated thunderstorms are likely in the upper part of the country. Locals should monitor their health because the weather conditions are changing.
In the South, westerly and northwesterly winds dominate the Andaman Sea. The Gulf of Thailand will still see thundershowers. Waves in the Andaman Sea are expected to be moderate, about one to two metres high. They may exceed two metres during thunderstorms. Waves in the Gulf are about one metre high, and also rise above two metres in stormy weather. All marine vessels should navigate with caution and avoid areas with thunderstorms.
Separately, severe tropical storm Fung-wong is currently over the upper South China Sea. It is expected to move toward Taiwan between 12 and 13 November. This storm will not affect Thailand. However, people planning to travel should check local weather updates before their trip.

Chiang Rai Weather in November
Chiang Rai, located in Northern Thailand, is currently experiencing the beginning of its cool season during early November. This period marks the refreshing shift from the heavy monsoon rains towards drier, more pleasant conditions.
Based on typical historical patterns and current meteorological outlooks, 11 November promises to be comfortably cool, especially during the mornings and evenings, with gentle warmth expected mid-day.
How Warm Will It Be?
- Maximum Temperature: Expect temperatures to reach around 27 to 28°C (81 to 82°F) during the hottest part of the afternoon.
- Minimum Temperature: Overnight and in the early hours, the mercury should drop to a cooler range of 18 to 19°C (64 to 66°F).
- Average Range: Throughout November, conditions usually range between 17 and 31°C (63 and 88°F). A mid-month day like this offers a wonderfully balanced, temperate climate.
These conditions are considered excellent “cool weather” in Thailand. They are a welcome change from the scorching summer heat, which often exceeds 35°C (95°F), and the high humidity of the rainy season.
Other Conditions Expected
- Sunshine: There should be plenty of bright daylight, with approximately seven or eight hours of sun. Skies will be partly cloudy, though general cloud cover starts reducing significantly later in November.
- Likelihood of Rain: The chance of a brief shower is low, sitting at about 20 to 30 per cent. On average, November only records six or seven rainy days in total, with monthly precipitation measuring about 49 to 55 mm (roughly two inches).
- Humidity and Wind: Humidity levels will be moderate, hovering between 60 and 70 per cent. Coupled with light breezes, the air will feel invigorating rather than stiflingly sticky.
- Sun Times: The sun is expected to rise at roughly 6:30 AM and set around 5:45 PM (local time).
Why Visit Now and What to Plan
November is perhaps the ideal month to travel to Chiang Rai because of these cooler temperatures. The air gets even crisper as the brief winter progresses, with December and January lows sometimes dropping to 15°C (59°F). This excellent weather allows for extensive outdoor excursions without the risk of heatstroke.
Suggestions for Enjoying the Climate:
- Walks in the Morning and Evening: Take a quiet stroll to sites like the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) or the Blue Temple near dawn or dusk. The fresh air enhances the peaceful atmosphere there.
- Hill Activities: Consider walking near the Doi Tung Royal Villa or visiting local hill tribe villages. If you travel higher than 1,000 metres, remember to pack a light jumper or jacket.
- Local Dining: Explore the Night Bazaar for street food. Warm, comforting dishes like khao soi soup taste perfect in the evening chill.
- What to Pack: Light clothing layers are best. Bring long sleeves for the cooler hours and always use sunscreen during the middle of the day. A small umbrella might be useful for sudden, short downpours.
If your trip coincides with this time, you have arrived during a peak period, perfect for attending seasonal events or simply relaxing among the misty hills.
