CHIANG MAI – The Director of Chiang Mai’s International Airport told reporters that rising tensions in the Middle East have caused  Etihad Airways to temporarily cancel its direct Chiang Mai to Abu Dhabi flights with no set return date. The airport has also increased security checks, although staff have not received any unusual threat alerts.

On March 2, 2026, Karun Thangkuljeeraphat, Director of Chiang Mai International Airport (AOT), explained that several countries have restricted airspace because of the situation in the region.

However, Chiang Mai Airport has just one direct route connected to the Middle East, Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The airline normally operates four direct flights per week between Abu Dhabi and Chiang Mai, but it has now suspended the route temporarily.

As a result, Chiang Mai Airport had to cancel flight EY427 from Chiang Mai to Abu Dhabi on March 1, 2026. Around 160 passengers were affected. The cancellation happened because the inbound flight, EY426 from Abu Dhabi to Chiang Mai, had already been called off.

According to the airport director, Etihad Airways handled passenger assistance for everyone impacted. The airline arranged hotel accommodation and offered options for rebooking, onward travel, or postponing trips.

In addition, the airline shared updates with travelers through its website. For upcoming flight days, the airport and airline will continue to coordinate and review the situation day by day.

Meanwhile, Chiang Mai Airport has strengthened its security posture during this period. Karun said the airport already follows strict safety and security standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Still, because of the current climate, the airport has increased the intensity of screening and inspections. Even though there have been no additional warnings or signs of a specific threat, the airport says it can tighten measures further right away if an alert comes in.
