PHITSANULOK – Police reported a shocking crash when a speeding pickup driver was with his wife, child, and two elderly women on board, racing a second pickup, clipped a petrol station worker on a motorcycle, then lost control and smashed into a team of highway construction workers. The other pickup also collided. Three people died, and seven were injured.
Pol Lt Sirawit Pankawi, deputy inspector at Mueang Phitsanulok Police Station, received the alert about a major collision involving pickups and a motorcycle with multiple casualties.
The crash happened on Mittraphap Road, in front of the Bangchak station (Khok Chang), Samo Khae, Mueang Phitsanulok, a little after 8.30 pm on 6 November. Rescue teams from the Prasart Boonsathan Foundation were sent to the scene.
At the site, officers found a Phitsanulok-registered Isuzu D-Max pickup, wrecked on all sides. Inside were three injured people and one deceased passenger, an elderly woman. Three adult casualties and one child were rushed to the hospital. Another elderly woman later died in the hospital.
Nearby, a Honda motorcycle, registration 1 กส 6897 Phitsanulok, lay on the road. The rider, a male petrol station employee who had just finished his shift, suffered critical injuries and was taken to the hospital.
A short distance away, a Phitsanulok-registered Nissan pickup used by the road crew was found parked at the roadside with rear-end damage. The body of a male road worker lay close by. Four more road workers were hurt and taken to the hospital.
About 100 metres further on, officers located a grey Isuzu D-Max with Bangkok plates, showing scrape marks. The driver, a man travelling alone, fled but was tracked down soon after. He was detained and taken to Mueang Phitsanulok Police Station for questioning. He initially admitted he had been racing another pickup before the collision that led to deaths and injuries.
Updated casualty list, three fatalities:
- Ms Sureerat Puangtho, 42, of 30/74 Singhawat Road, Nai Mueang, Mueang Phitsanulok, a passenger in the pickup, died at Bangkok Phitsanulok Hospital.
- Mr Kharom Thongkhao, 47, of 111, Moo 10, Sa Kaeo, Mueang, Kamphaeng Phet, a highway construction worker, died at the scene.
- Mrs Kamlai Puangtho, 60, of 30/74 Singhawat Road, Nai Mueang, Mueang Phitsanulok, a passenger in the pickup, died at the scene.
Seven injured:
- Mr Nopparat Thongthap, 23, was sent to Bangkok Phitsanulok Hospital.
- Ms Naparat Kaewthum, 22, was sent to Bangkok Phitsanulok Hospital.
- Ms Renu Pana, 41, was sent to Phra Phutthachinnarat Hospital.
- Mr Weerapon Sangho, 33, was sent to Phra Phutthachinnarat Hospital.
- Mr Khomsan Wongwilai, 28, was sent to Phra Phutthachinnarat Hospital.
- Mr Kittipong Chitsuwan, 26, was sent to Phitsanulok Hospital.
- Mr Prasert Yasa, 47, was sent to Phra Phutthachinnarat Hospital.
Damaged vehicles:
- ISUZU D-MAX, grey, Bangkok registration, front heavily damaged.
- ISUZU D-MAX, silver-grey, Phitsanulok registration, damage all around.
- NISSAN NAVARA, black, Phitsanulok registration, rear damage.
- HONDA WAVE 125i, green and black, Phitsanulok registration.
CCTV footage showed the Phitsanulok-registered Isuzu D-Max with five people on board, the driver, his wife, a child, and two elderly women, travelling at high speed alongside a grey Isuzu D-Max with Bangkok plates, driven by a lone male who fled but was later caught.
The Phitsanulok pickup clipped a Honda motorcycle ridden by the petrol station worker leaving work, then veered into the road crew’s Nissan pickup and struck five workers. One worker died, and four were injured.
