PHITSANULOK –Police and rescue crews made a grim discovery yesterday when they found a burned-out car at the bottom of a ravine, about 50 metres below road level. Inside, all that was left were human bones, believed to be from a person trapped by fire inside the vehicle.
Police crime scene investigators and officers from Chat Trakan Police Station joined rescue workers to inspect the crash site near Moo 13, Ban Teentok, Ban Dong Subdistrict, where the burnt MG car was found at the base of a ravine.
The car was discovered around 3 pm on 6 August by volunteers from the Prasart Boonsathan Foundation. They were there to help after a timber lorry that lost control and plunged down the same hillside.
While searching, they found the overturned MG car about 20 metres from the truck accident site, covered in thick vines.
They found human remains inside the car and called the police to check the scene. Due to darkness and poor weather, the wreck could not be recovered right away. The authorities returned the next day to gather more evidence.
The entire car was destroyed by fire, with only bones remaining inside. Investigators have not yet confirmed the identity of the deceased, but they collected evidence and contacted other agencies to check the car’s registration and start the identification process.
Early findings suggest the MG may have gone off the mountain road, caught fire and burned, leaving only skeletal remains. Forensic tests are underway to confirm the cause of death and identify the victim.
The emergency teams are preparing to recover both the car and the truck for further inspection at Chat Trakan Police Station. They are also working to find the victim’s family so that they can perform religious rites.
