CHIANG RAI – Joint Thai security forces made a massive drug bust near the famous mountain tourist destination of Phu Chi Fa in Chiang Rai Province on June 6, 2026. Authorities seized more than one ton of crystal methamphetamine (ice) and ketamine following a dramatic midnight car chase.
Hours later, a follow-up search nearby uncovered an additional one million methamphetamine tablets hidden in the roadside brush. The operation dismantled a major smuggling pipeline running from the Laos border into inner Thailand, highlighting a deep collaboration between border patrol units, military officers, and national investigators working together to secure the border.
The major drug interception began at 12:30 AM on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Officers from the Thoeng Police Station, Ranger Company 3105, and Interception Task Force 4 set up a security checkpoint at Khrai Village in the Tub Tao subdistrict.
A white Isuzu D-Max pickup truck with Chiang Mai license plates approached the checkpoint from the mountain path. Following closely behind was a bronze Ford pickup truck carrying a covered metal cargo rack.
The security team stopped the Isuzu, which was serving as a scout car. The driver, a lone male, had no illegal items inside his vehicle. However, the Ford pickup truck behind him stopped abruptly 300 meters before the checkpoint, made a sharp U-turn, and sped back up the mountain.
Officers chased the fleeing vehicle through the night. They later found the Ford pickup abandoned near a cemetery at Ton Khueng Village. The driver had already escaped into the dense forest, leaving behind 39 fertilizer sacks in the truck bed.

Over One Ton of Narcotics Discovered in Abandoned Truck
When investigators inspected the abandoned Ford pickup truck, they discovered a massive haul of illegal narcotics packed tightly into the cargo bed.
The 39 fertilizer sacks contained two distinct types of illicit drugs:
- Crystal Methamphetamine (Ice): 20 sacks weighing approximately 549 kilograms.
- Ketamine: 19 sacks weighing roughly 520 kilograms.
In total, the narcotics found inside the vehicle weighed more than 1,069 kilograms (1.06 metric tons). While the driver of the scout car was successfully arrested at the scene, regional security forces immediately launched a manhunt in the surrounding jungle to track down the escaped driver.

Follow-Up Patrol Uncovers an Extra Million Meth Tablets
The operation did not stop with the initial truck seizure. Later that afternoon, at around 3:30 PM, a heavily armed joint task force expanded its search. The team included the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) Region 5, Border Patrol Police Company 326, and the Pha Muang Task Force.
While patrolling near Rom Pho Thong Village, officers noticed fresh tire tracks cutting off the road and leading directly into the thick roadside brush.
Upon closer inspection, the team found five large black plastic bags hidden in the bushes. Inside the bags were rainbow-colored fertilizer sacks stuffed with methamphetamine tablets, locally known as “ya ba.”
Every bag contained roughly 200,000 pills stamped with the green “Y1” logo, totaling exactly 1,000,000 meth tablets. Security officials believe smugglers hid these pills in the brush temporarily, waiting for a safe moment to transport them deeper into Thailand’s central provinces.
Securing the Thai-Laos Border
This major operation underscores the ongoing security challenges along the Thai-Laos border in Chiang Rai. Drug syndicates frequently exploit the winding mountain roads around major tourist hubs like Phu Chi Fa to move illicit substances into the country.
According to regional reports from MGR Online, all seized narcotics have been taken into legal custody for further forensic testing.
Investigators are currently tracking down the registered owners of the vehicles and examining evidence to confirm whether the one million meth tablets belong to the same smuggling ring behind the initial one-ton cargo haul. Border security remains on high alert as the search for the escaped suspect continues.
