PATTAYA – Police in the resort town of Pattaya, Thailand, report finding two U.S. citizens dead in their Jomtien hotel room on the third floor. The man was 85 years old. The woman was 65.
Rescue teams spotted the pair on the floor. They held each other close. Officials think they died three or four days earlier. Hotel workers finally checked on them after no activity.
Khong Dong Tan police arrived around 11 a.m. with workers from the Sawang Boriboon Dhammasathan Foundation. The couple lay next to each other. No marks of struggle showed up. It looked like they went peacefully.
Staff said the Americans checked in for a month. They stayed inside for days. That worry led to the check.
Police identified the man as Richard Carl Speth Jr., age 85. His partner was Kelly Marie Bennett, age 65. Both came from the United States. Not many details surfaced yet on their lives or the reasons for their trip.
Pol. Lt. Col. Chinawat Thissala, who headed up the investigation, told Thai media that initial clues point to suicide. A note was discovered, and pills lay scattered by the bodies. Their bodies will be sent for a postmortem examination, and the U.S. Embassy has been notified.
Pattaya draws retirees and visitors. People like the beaches, chill pace, and cheap living. Jomtien Beach sits south of Pattaya’s main strip. It feels quieter. Older expats pick it for long trips. The couple’s month-long stay matches that. They sought Thailand’s sun and smiles.
