BANGKOK – A heartbreaking case has shaken the community of Ratchaburi in central Thailand after a 1-year-old boy died from severe physical abuse by his stepfather.
Police have detained the child’s mother and stepfather following a confession that paints a grim picture of repeated violence.
The investigation began after young Kluay Khai passed away at a local hospital on April 7. Doctors immediately noticed suspicious injuries that did not align with a natural death. The toddler’s body was covered in bruises and distinct burn marks on his back and buttocks.
Quick Summary of the Incident
- The Victim: An 18-month-old boy, affectionately known as “Kluay Khai.”
- The Suspects: The biological mother, Saowaros (30), and the stepfather, Surasak (38).
- The Cause of Death: Medical exams revealed brain trauma caused by blunt force, along with cigarette burns and electrical shock marks.
- The Confession: The stepfather admitted to hitting the child until he lost consciousness and then using a fish-shocking device to try and “wake him up.”
- Legal Status: Both suspects face charges of joint assault resulting in death and illegal drug use.
Initially, the mother gave conflicting statements, claiming the boy had unexplained seizures. However, under intense questioning, the stepfather, Surasak, broke down and confessed to a history of violence. He told investigators he became “annoyed” by the child’s crying and had been abusing him for over two months.
According to police reports, the situation turned deadly on April 6. Surasak admitted to punching the boy in the forehead so hard that the toddler fell unconscious. In a bizarre and cruel attempt to revive the child, Surasak used a powered fish-shocking tool on the boy’s body.
The mother was reportedly present during the incident but did not intervene. Neighbors were eventually called to help get the child to the hospital after he began bleeding from the nose and mouth.
The news has sparked intense anger in the Ratchaburi province. Police were forced to cancel a public “crime reenactment” scheduled for the suspects after a large, angry crowd gathered at the crime scene and the police station, fearing a mob lynching might occur.
Both parents also tested positive for drug use. Officers are currently preparing to move the pair to Ratchaburi Provincial Court for detention. Meanwhile, the boy’s grandmother has taken his body to Wat Sri Prachum Chon for funeral rites, as his own mother reportedly refused to claim the body.
As the legal process moves forward, the community is left mourning a life cut tragically short. The funeral for the toddler is scheduled to conclude with a cremation ceremony on April 11.
