KHON KAEN — A Royal Thai Police officer faces murder charges after allegedly shooting his ex-wife to death in front of witnesses in Phra Yuen district, Khon Kaen, on Tuesday. The incident has sparked renewed concerns over domestic violence and the conduct of off-duty law enforcement officers.
Authorities identified the suspect as Pol Snr Col Somchai (last name withheld pending trial), 45, who was taken into custody shortly after the shooting. According to Pol Col Chalit Morakotsriwan, chief of Phra Yuen police, the victim, 41-year-old Ms. Ratchanee, was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
- Suspect: A senior police officer currently in custody.
- Victim: The suspect’s former wife, aged 41.
- Weapon: A 9mm service pistol recovered at the scene.
- Motive: Initial reports point to a domestic dispute over child custody and personal jealousy.
Details of the Incident
The shooting took place around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Witnesses told police that the officer arrived at the victim’s home to discuss personal matters. The conversation quickly escalated into a heated argument that spilled onto the street.
According to a neighbor who requested anonymity, “They were shouting about their children. Then everything went quiet for a second before we heard three or four gunshots.”
Responding officers found the suspect standing near the body. He did not resist arrest and reportedly surrendered his firearm to his colleagues. Investigators confirmed the weapon used was a 9mm caliber pistol, which is standard issue for many Thai police units.
The Police have filed charges of premeditated murder and the illegal use of a firearm in a public place. While the suspect is a member of the force, officials emphasized that he will receive no special treatment.
“We are handling this case with the utmost transparency,” said Pol Maj Gen Adul Narongsak, a spokesperson for the Khon Kaen Police, during a press briefing. “The fact that the suspect is a police officer makes this tragedy even more distressing. However, the law applies to everyone equally.”
The suspect has been denied bail due to the severity of the crime and concerns that he might use his influence to interfere with witnesses. He is currently being held at a high-security detention center while the prosecution builds its case.
Concerns Over Domestic Violence
This case is the latest in a series of domestic violence incidents involving armed officials in Thailand. Advocacy groups are calling for stricter psychological evaluations for officers who carry firearms, both on and off duty.
“This is not just a personal tragedy; it is a systemic issue,” said a representative from a local women’s rights NGO. “When those trained to protect the public use their tools for violence at home, it highlights a need for better mental health support and stricter gun control within the force.”
The investigation is expected to wrap up within the next 30 days. Forensic teams are currently analyzing ballistics data and reviewing CCTV footage from the neighborhood to verify the sequence of events.
The victim’s family has requested privacy as they make funeral arrangements. A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for early next month, where the suspect will enter a formal plea.
