LOS ANGELES – Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor celebrated for his strong screen presence and wide range, has died at 95. A statement from his wife, Luciana Duvall, said he died peacefully on February 15, 2026, at their ranch in Middleburg, Virginia, with loved ones nearby.

The next day, Luciana shared the news on social media. “Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort. To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything.”

No cause of death was shared. Still, the statement described a calm passing after a long life. In recent years, Robert Duvall kept a low profile at his Virginia home, though he still reached out to fans at times, including a warm Thanksgiving message in late 2025.

A Career That Stretched Across Seven Decades

Born Robert Selden Duvall on January 5, 1931, in San Diego, California, he grew up in a military family. He later served in the U.S. Army, then chose acting. After training at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, he built early credits on stage and television.

In 1962, he made his film debut in To Kill a Mockingbird as Boo Radley. The part was small, but it left a lasting mark and pointed to bigger things ahead.

Robert Duvall’s career rose fast in the 1970s, thanks to roles that proved he could shine in both supporting and lead work.

  • Tom Hagen in The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974): As the steady Corleone consigliere, Duvall played calm strength and sharp judgment. The performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
  • Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979): He brought a wild edge to the helicopter commander, while still keeping him real. The role also delivered one of the film’s most quoted lines, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”
  • Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies (1983): Robert Duvall won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a worn-down country singer trying to rebuild his life. The role showed quiet emotion and hard-earned hope.
  • Augustus “Gus” McCrae in Lonesome Dove (1989 miniseries): His charming Texas Ranger earned him an Emmy, and many fans still call it one of his best performances.

He also appeared in MASH* (1970), Network (1976), The Great Santini (1979), Days of Thunder (1990), and The Apostle (1997), which he also produced. Over the years, he worked on more than 90 films. Along the way, he won four Golden Globes, two Emmys, and an Oscar, plus many nominations.

Because Robert Duvall could shift so easily between types, he played cops, soldiers, and mob figures with a grounded feel. At the same time, he brought warmth and depth that kept even hard characters human.

Tributes for Robert Duvall From Co-Stars, Filmmakers, and Fans

After news of his death spread, actors and fans shared memories across social media.

  • Adam Sandler posted on Instagram: “Funny as hell. Strong as hell. One of the greatest actors we ever had. Such a great man to talk to and laugh with. Loved him so much. We all did.”
  • Tommy Lee Jones, his Lonesome Dove co-star, praised Duvall’s work ethic and the lasting stamp he left on the Western genre.
  • Stephen King nodded to the famous Apocalypse Now line in a post, a sign of how deeply Duvall’s work reached into pop culture.
  • Other stars, including Jamie Lee Curtis and fellow castmates from past projects, shared stories about his humor, kindness, and steady professionalism.

Fans also filled comment sections with favorite scenes and quotes. Many said he could disappear into a role, yet still feel instantly recognizable because of pure skill.

A Lasting Reputation as a True Craft Worker

Robert Duvall built his performances on honesty. Robert Duvall often pulled from real life, including his military experience, to shape characters and behavior. Later, he also took on more work behind the camera, including directing The Apostle, and stayed active until health concerns led to a quieter routine.

He is survived by his wife, Luciana Pedraza, whom he married in 2005, along with other family members. In his last public notes to fans, he shared thanks and a steady love for storytelling.
