CHIANG MAI -Police have seized 4 million meth pills after one drug runner was shot dead and another escaped on foot in Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai, on Wednesday.
A Police spokesperson told the Manager Online that officers from the Fang Narcotics Suppression Bureau received a tip that a meth shipment would be moved from a border village into Mae Ai or Fang. Multiple agencies coordinated a plan to intercept the vehicle.
At about 15.30, a white four-door pickup, registered in Chiang Rai, was spotted leaving Ban Na Ma Uen, Mae Sao subdistrict, Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai. Officers signalled the driver to stop before the entrance to Ban Mok Pao. The pickup broke through the checkpoint, so police pursued.
As officers closed in and a vehicle blocked the road ahead, the suspects fired to force a way through, then abandoned the pickup and ran. Officers returned fire. When the gunfire stopped, one suspect was found dead by the Maesao Creek. A second suspect fled into the nearby forest.
A search of the pickup uncovered 40 sacks of methamphetamine, about 4 million tablets. The drugs were seized as evidence. Investigators are now working to track down others linked to the shipment and bring them to justice.
