PATTAYA -Police are investigating a shocking death after officers found a man believed to be Chinese hanging near railway tracks on the Chon Buri side close to Pattaya. The discovery, reported on March 5, 2026, quickly turned into a major case because the victim showed clear signs of assault before death.
Authorities found the body beneath a roof that covers a hotel’s motorcycle parking area beside the railway line. The man, estimated to be 30 to 40 years old and appearing East Asian, hung from a cream-colored nylon rope tied to a steel beam.
His stance raised concerns because his knees were slightly bent, and one hand sat near the noose. Combined with visible injuries, that detail pushed investigators to treat the case as suspicious, not a straightforward suicide.
After nearby residents alerted authorities, police and rescue workers arrived and secured the area. Officers saw heavy swelling on the man’s face, which suggested repeated blows.
In addition, his legs had several dark marks that looked consistent with stun gun or taser use. Bruises and other wounds across his body also suggested he suffered a serious beating before he died.
Investigators also recovered three handwritten suicide notes near the scene. However, police have not accepted them at face value, given the level of trauma on the body.
Forensic staff noted that the injuries did not appear self-inflicted and pointed to violence by others. The man had no identification documents on him, yet his appearance and the location, an area popular with Chinese visitors and residents, led police to list him as likely Chinese while they work to confirm his identity.
Why Pattaya Police Suspect Foul Play
Investigators pointed to several warning signs that do not match a typical suicide scene:
- Severe swelling and bruising on the face and body that suggest an assault
- Dark, burn-like marks on the legs are believed to come from stun gun shocks
- A lack of signs that often appear in voluntary hanging cases
- A body position that raised concerns about staging after an attack
- Suicide notes found nearby despite injuries that resemble torture
Because of those factors, police have shifted the focus toward a possible homicide. Pattaya and Chon Buri officers are working together, while forensic teams collect fingerprints, DNA, and fiber evidence tied to the rope and the surrounding area.
Pattaya has seen more incidents involving Chinese nationals in recent years, often connected to nightlife disputes, scams, or conflicts within social circles. While police have not linked those cases to this death, officials noted that the city has dealt with a range of violent incidents, such as:
- Robberies and assaults targeting Chinese tourists at hotels
- Knife attacks at bars involving Chinese suspects
- High-profile violence tied to business disputes or scam groups
As a result, authorities have increased patrols in entertainment zones and areas near the railway to help prevent similar incidents and to reassure locals and visitors.
Police Ask for Public for Assistance
Police are now reviewing CCTV footage from nearby hotels, roads, and spots along the railway. They are asking anyone who saw the man in the days before his death, or anyone who noticed suspicious people in the area, to contact Mueang Pattaya Police Station or the Tourist Police hotline.
An autopsy is pending and should clarify the cause of death, including whether hanging caused death on its own or whether earlier injuries played a fatal role. At the same time, investigators are checking immigration records and reaching out through Chinese-speaking community channels to confirm the man’s identity.
The case has added to safety concerns in Pattaya, a city that hosts millions of visitors each year, including many travelers from China. Police said they will run a full investigation and share findings as evidence and witness accounts develop.
