CHIANG MAI – A 30-year old man has been arrested after beating his mother to an inch of her life for failing to go get money to fuel his online gambling habit. She is presently in ICU with 4 broken ribs, a ruptured lung, bleeding in the brain, and a fractured eye socket.

His arrest comes after Mr. Wichian Thongsuk, village headman in San Sai, Chiang Mai found Ms. Chatsuda Kowitwanich badly beaten in her home after neighbours reported yelling and screaming from her home.

He said Ms. Chatsuda had cut her wrists because she weaned to escape her sons abuse by dying. He said he immediately called police and emergency rescue services, who transported her to the local hospital. She was immediately attended to by doctors and is presently in incentive care.

When question by police the mother refused to implicate her son or press charges, however after persuasion by Mr. Wichian and local villagers she finally broke down and filed a police report from her hospital bed.

She told police that her son had returned home from studying abroad with his new wife about a year ago. She said he became addicted to online gambling and refused to work. Soon his wife left and she was alone with her son.

His addiction became so bad that he forced her to sell of all her belonging and when she had nothing left to sell he forced her to borrow money from villagers. She said he would become violent and beat her if she didn’t give him money.

Whenever villagers saw her with bruises she would tell them she was clumsy and fell due to embarrassment. She said her latest beating came when her some told her to borrow money but she returned empty handed because she owed so much money nobody would lend to her anymore.

She said the beating was so bad she wanted it all to stop so she cut her wrists hoping to end her life. She was saved moments later by Mr. Wichian the village headman and long time friend.

The police have since arrested her son identified only as Mr. Kritthanat who cried upon his arrest and said his mother physically and mentally abused him.

Villagers asked police to prosecute as soon as possible because since the incident, they have been scared to leave their homes and didn’t want Mr. Kritthanat returning to the village.

The San Sai Police Station have charged Mr. Kritthanat with attempted murder and he is being held in police custody without bail.
